The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Amethyst Oud arrived in 2018 as Korres's take on a tension: the duality of the amethyst itself, a stone whose violet depths shift depending on the light. The idea of contrast drives this composition. Citrus and grapefruit hit sharp and immediate at the top, delivering an aromatic brightness that feels almost crystalline in its clarity. The grapefruit doesn't linger softly, it arrives with intention. Geranium and lavender hold the heart in something almost classically structured, a nod to the fougère tradition that gives the mid notes a timeless quality. The lavender adds a subtle herbal sweetness that tempers the geranium's green sharpness, creating a middle ground that feels both familiar and quietly sophisticated. But it's the base that earns the name. Oud, patchouli, vetiver.
The interesting thing here is the pyramid's inversion. Most oud fragrances announce their base from the start, leaning on it as a blunt instrument. Amethyst Oud buries its namesake note beneath citrus brightness and an herbal heart that reads almost fougère. The grapefruit at the opening is aggressive, the kind of top note that announces itself before you finish spraying. But the geranium and lavender are doing quiet work underneath, building a cool, aromatic bridge that makes the oud's eventual arrival feel earned rather than imposed. The patchouli doesn't compete with the oud. It complements it, adding earthiness that keeps the drydown from going too smooth.
The evolution
The opening arrives sharp and clean, grapefruit and mandarin zest that makes an immediate statement. You might want to spray in air conditioning or nothing. As that citrus fades, the geranium takes over, and the fragrance enters its most interesting phase. The lavender and geranium together create an aromatic, slightly sweet quality that feels classical, almost generational. Not old-fashioned, but rooted in something older than the release date suggests. Then the base arrives. Patchouli and oud arrive together, but the handoff is not seamless. There is a moment where the citrus has fully exited and the oud has not quite settled, leaving just the geranium and patchouli in conversation. The oud eventually anchors everything. What develops on skin over time is woody, resinous, and surprisingly animalic in the best way.
Cultural impact
Amethyst Oud arrived in 2018, combining mineral-inspired naming with oud, a material steeped in Middle Eastern tradition. By pairing the gemstone reference with this classic base note, the fragrance occupies a space that feels both contemporary and deeply rooted in material history. The global market had seen growing interest in oud-based compositions, and this launch arrived at a moment when such scents were gaining broader attention. What distinguishes this particular offering is its restraint.
