The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Poisoned Vow is a composition by Natasha Washabaugh for Keskiyön Hovi's House of Midnight collection. Each release in the line operates as a held image, a single atmospheric idea stretched long enough to leave a mark. This one carries that approach to a sharp edge, and the title does exactly what it promises. A vow is a promise, an oath sealed and meant to hold. Poisoned means something got into it without telling you. The tension between those two definitions runs through the entire composition from the opening spray, building a fragrance where sweetness and smoke never resolve into anything safe or easily categorized. Nothing here is decorative, and nothing here is incidental.
What makes this composition distinctive is its refusal to separate the pleasure from the threat. Red currant opens with a glistening tartness, sharp and almost effervescent, the kind of fruit note that reads more like juice than jam. Bourbon vanilla arrives to soften that bite, but it does not arrive as bakery warmth. It rounds the edges with something deeper and faintly alcoholic, the resinous sweetness of extract rather than frosting. Smoking the cedar underneath rewrites what those sweeter materials are doing. The cedar is not a clean, supporting wood.
The evolution
The opening belongs to red currant, glistening and almost tart, bright enough to read like a cold glass of something at the start of a long evening. The saffron doesn't arrive as spice. It arrives as a flicker of something metallic and warm, like the flash of a lighter caught in peripheral vision. Cedar underneath, barely there yet, holding smoke at a distance. As the composition wears in, the fruit darkens. The currant stops sparkling and starts to stain, sinking into bourbon vanilla that arrives not as bakery sweetness but as something rounder and more alcoholic, the smell of vanilla extract in a room that's been closed for too long. The smoked cedar surfaces eventually, and this is where the composition fully commits to its own name. Not campfire. Not incense. More like the inside of a wooden box that held something burning hours ago. That note carries through to the end.
Cultural impact
Poisoned Vow sits inside Keskiyön Hovi's House of Midnight collection, a catalog that frames its releases around nocturnal imagery and after-dark mood. The sweet-smoke paradox at the center of this composition fits that register perfectly. It is perfume that flirts like it has a secret, and the smell of that secrecy is exactly what the bottle holds. Wearing it feels less like applying a fragrance and more like keeping something to yourself, a private accord tucked just under the collar where only close distance catches it.
