The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Karakash Perfume, founded in Turkey in 2022, built its reputation on mastering oud and amber in modern formulations. When the house sought to create the Gold Collection's 2023 entry, they turned to French perfumer Amandine Galliano, someone whose training allowed her to work with heavy natural materials without losing compositional clarity. Galliano understood that the house wanted to push their signature darkness into new territory, introducing fruity and floral elements that could coexist with their established oud-forward identity.
The note structure reflects Karakash's philosophy of balancing darkness with dimension. Oud provides the foundation of identity that the brand is known for, while the heart notes demonstrate a willingness to evolve. Raspberry and rose might seem like unconventional companions for oud, but Galliano uses them to create contrast, preventing the scent from becoming monochromatic. The drydown's incense, birch, and saffron bring the composition back to familiar territory while adding complexity. Each phase invites the wearer to discover something new.
The evolution
Penumbra Fever begins in shadow. Oud arrives full-force, resinous and uncompromising, immediately establishing the scent's Turkish heritage. The transition to the heart is where Galliano's artistry becomes apparent: raspberry cuts through the darkness with unexpected brightness, rose tempers the fruitiness with romantic depth, and geranium adds a green, almost medicinal edge that keeps the composition from becoming merely sweet. The drydown marks a return to smoke and spice. Incense and birch create an atmospheric haze, while saffron provides the golden thread that connects the fragrance's phases, its warm, leathery character lingering long after application.
Cultural impact
Since its 2023 debut, Penumbra Fever has found a niche among collectors who favor smoky oud with a fruity twist. Wearers often mention its suitability for cooler evenings and its ability to stand out without shouting. Compared with other Karakash releases, its birch‑smoked base is noted as a distinguishing signature, earning it a modest cult following in niche forums.
