The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Serotonial is named for the feeling it delivers, not the neurotransmitter itself, but the mood lift that comes with it. Kalit released this in 2022 alongside Medina and Corniche, working with perfumer Nathalie Feisthauer to build something that felt genuinely different from the house's other compositions. Serotonial aimed for clarity with depth, creating an olfactory experience that feels both immediate and lingering. The fragrance opens with a tart, almost metallic freshness from rhubarb that surprises the senses, while black pepper adds a subtle warmth beneath the surface. Juniper berries arrive green and bracing, grounding the top notes in something crisp and aromatic.
The materials tell the story. Ambrette and ambroxan form the structural heart of the base. Ambrette, derived from musk mallow seeds, provides a warm, slightly nutty quality that reads as skin-warmth rather than traditional musk. Ambroxan, the synthetic ambergris substitute, adds depth and persistence without the ocean-animalic character of the real thing. These ingredients work in concert to create a foundation that shapes the woody-green pyramid above it, lending the entire composition a sense of cohesion and staying power.
The evolution
Serotonial opens with an immediate tartness, rhubarb and black pepper arriving together, followed quickly by green juniper berries that soften the bite. The clary sage adds an herbal quality, introducing a green complexity that enriches the opening. Within the first twenty minutes, the sea notes emerge, and the composition shifts from sharp and green to something rounder and more diffuse. Once the pine and lily of the valley arrive, the fragrance enters its intimate phase, moving close to the skin rather than announcing itself. The drydown is where ambroxan and ambrette take over, wrapping the cedar in something warmer and more personal. Balsam fir and oakmoss anchor the base without adding heaviness. The progression feels natural and deliberate, each stage building smoothly on what came before, creating a fragrance that reveals itself gradually rather than all at once.
Cultural impact
Serotonial arrived as an alternative to predictable fresh fragrances, offering something that feels both familiar and unexpected. The rhubarb and marine notes create a tart and briny character at the top that distinguishes it from conventional aquatic scents. Wearers tend to appreciate its restraint, it does not announce itself, but rewards those who get close. It reads as quietly confident rather than attention-seeking, appealing to those who prefer subtlety over spectacle.
