The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Anne Flipo composed the Lavender & Coriander Cologne as part of Jo Malone London's Herb Garden collection, approaching lavender with a cooler, more considered sensibility. The herb garden framing gave the composition its structure: coriander brings a green, slightly peppery sharpness that opens the scent, while sage adds an earthy herbal depth beneath the surface. The lavender itself serves as the anchoring element, holding the various facets together rather than allowing any single note to dominate. Within the Jo Malone London tradition of building fragrances through thoughtful combination, this one manages to feel complete and self-contained, standing confidently on its own without requiring the layering the brand is known for.
The note structure here is worth sitting with. Lavender appears twice in the pyramid, once as a heart note, again as a base note. That repetition isn't an accident. It means the lavender you smell at the opening isn't gone by the drydown. It's still there, deeper, woven into the tonka bean warmth. Coriander's role is subtler than the name suggests. Less a starring note, more a green undertone that keeps the sweetness honest. Sage does the heavy lifting in the heart, herbal, slightly camphoraceous, giving the lavender something to lean against rather than melt into.
The evolution
The opening hits quick. Coriander and sage arrive together, green, slightly peppery, with sage's herbal warmth immediately present. The coriander fades first, leaving sage and lavender to settle into the skin within the first 30 minutes. That's when the heart takes over. The lavender absolute steps forward here, more floral than fresh, with the tonka bean beginning to soften the edges. By the second hour, the drydown is all tonka bean, sweet, warm, slightly vanillic. The tonka bean lingers closest to the skin for the remaining hours. Moderate sillage throughout. This one stays close, intimate, personal, projecting a subtle presence that remains near the skin rather than announcing itself to the room.
Cultural impact
Anne Flipo brought her expertise in botanical compositions to this herbal cologne for the Herb Garden collection. The collection draws on the brand's longstanding tradition of working with natural, garden-inspired ingredients, creating fragrances that feel rooted in the natural world. Lavender and coriander together nod to the classic herb garden, yet the execution feels contemporary, offering something familiar delivered with a refined hand.
