The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Anne Flipo built Star Magnolia around a single flower and the idea of quiet discovery. The star magnolia is one of spring's earliest bloomers, emerging before its leaves fully unfurl, a white cup against still-bare branches. It's delicate without being fragile, and that's the tension Flipo wanted to capture: something with presence that doesn't announce itself. Released in 2017 as part of Jo Malone London's ongoing exploration of botanical subjects, this fragrance sits within a tradition of naming scents after the ingredients themselves, letting the material speak rather than wrapping it in narrative.
What makes Star Magnolia unusual is how literally it smells like its namesake. While many floral fragrances interpret or abstract the flower, this one stays close to the source, that slightly waxy, creamy blossom with green stems at the edges. The addition of shiso leaf in the opening is the tell: it's an Asian herb with a fresh, green, almost metallic quality that keeps the citrus from becoming conventional. The orange blossom in the heart doesn't overwhelm, it softens, sweetens, and extends the magnolia's natural character rather than replacing it. The result is a composition that rewards attention.
The evolution
It opens sharp. Ginger and lemon hit first, clean and assertive, with shiso leaf providing an herbal counterpoint that prevents the citrus from feeling like cleaning product. Within ten minutes, the magnolia arrives, not all at once, but gradually, softening the edges. The heart is where this fragrance lives. Orange blossom joins the magnolia, and together they create something creamy and intimate that lasts for hours. The drydown is subtle: amber warmth and sandalwood settle close to the skin, present but never heavy. On fabric, the magnolia lingers into the next day, faint, like a memory of a garden visited.
Cultural impact
Star Magnolia occupies a particular corner of the Jo Malone range: the limited edition that fans seek out repeatedly. Released in 2017 and reissued in limited quantities in 2023, it has developed a quiet cult following among those who prefer their florals restrained. It sits alongside other green florals like Wild Bluebell and Nectarine Blossom & Honey, though Star Magnolia reads as more botanical and less playful.
