Why it exists.
The beginning
Imaginary Authors partnered with ice cream maker Salt & Straw in 2022 on a project that blurred the line between confection and cologne. The concept called for a fragrance inspired by key lime pie, something that could evoke the pastry itself while standing on its own as a wearable scent. Perfumer Josh Meyer took the lead on development, working alongside the Salt & Straw team to translate a dessert into olfactory form. The collaboration marked one of the more unusual pairings in recent niche fragrance history, a perfume house and an ice cream kitchen sharing notes, and the result was A Swoon of Citrus, a composition that draws its sweetness from cake, its brightness from lime zest, and its lift from a generous pour of lychee and Italian lemon tree.
What makes this one worth a closer look is how its notes behave together on skin. Lime cake sets the opening, warm and buttery, the kind of sweetness that smells baked rather than candied. Lychee arrives shortly after, cool and translucent, softening the citrus with its own quiet juiciness. Italian lemon tree grounds the composition, pulling the zesty top notes toward something rooted and herbal. The interplay between the three reads as tart against sweet against cool, each note keeping the others in check.
The evolution
The opening announces itself with lime cake, zest-forward and almost effervescent, the sweetness present but not yet dominant. Within minutes the lychee surfaces, a cool, translucent fruit note that softens the citrus without dulling it. The heart settles into something less dessert and more grove, herbal and green underneath, the Italian lemon reading as leaf and bark as much as fruit. The cake warmth never fully disappears, but it recedes into the background like the memory of a meal. Cultural impact
The Salt & Straw collaboration put A Swoon of Citrus in front of audiences who would never have wandered into a niche fragrance shop, pastry regulars and ice cream enthusiasts curious about what a perfume inspired by their favorite dessert might smell like. The partnership gave the scent a kind of cross-over visibility, showing up at scoop shops and special menu launches well before it settled into standard fragrance rotation. For Imaginary Authors, it offered a chance to flex in a sweeter, more gourmand direction without abandoning the brand's narrative instincts.
