The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Hugo Boss designed the XX line in 2007 as a study in contrasts, two fragrances meant to emphasize the differences between sexes while maintaining the mutual magnetic attraction that carries a dose of aggression. The women's version, Hugo XX, was crafted to be casual, gourmand, and seductive, dedicated to a woman who carries herself with quiet confidence. Daphné Bugey built it as a fruity-floral, but she anchored it with something unexpected: basmati rice, a note that brings a subtle grain-like warmth to the composition. The result is a fragrance that feels simultaneously accessible and intriguing, where the sweetness of fruit and the elegance of florals find unexpected harmony through that quietly present rice accord.
The rice basmati note is what sets Hugo XX apart from the typical fruity-floral template. Instead of the standard rose-jasmine combination doing all the emotional work, the grain-like warmth of basmati rice adds an almost edible quality that makes the florals feel grounded, lived-in, real. On skin, the jasmine takes on a different character than it would in a standard floral composition, feeling warmer and more personal, as though it's responding to the wearer's own chemistry.
The evolution
The opening is all about brightness, mandarin, litchi, blackcurrant arriving together in a burst that's clean and slightly tart. The citrus doesn't bite, but it doesn't linger either. Within twenty minutes the jasmine and rose take over, and that's when the basmati rice announces itself. It's quiet at first, a grain-like warmth threading through the florals, making them feel less precious and more personal. By the second hour the fruity top notes have faded and you're in the heart proper, lush jasmine, soft rose, and that distinctive rice note that keeps everything grounded. The drydown is where Hugo XX earns its reputation: musk, sandalwood, amber, warm and close and intimate. The final impression isn't a fragrance, it's skin that happens to smell good, leaving a subtle trace that feels natural rather than applied.
Cultural impact
Hugo XX represents the brand's offering in the women's fragrance category, featuring jasmine sambac paired with basmati rice. This combination gives it a distinctive character that sets it apart from more typical floral fragrances. The pairing of jasmine with that warm, grain-like rice note creates something that feels both familiar in its floral structure and different in its unexpected depth, offering a scent that carries a certain sophistication through its unusual composition.
