Why it exists.
The beginning
H24 launched in 2021, composed by Christine Nagel, the perfumer at Hermès. The fragrance was conceived as an expression of the contemporary Hermès man: urban, precise, rooted in craft but facing forward. Where earlier Hermès men's scents leaned on earth and spice, H24 turned to something almost technological. A botanical sharpness, a metallic shimmer, the feeling of morning air through a glass-walled office. The composition reads as a portrait of the modern house, one that hasn't traded its leather-and-silk past for anything louder. Just quieter, and more exact. H24 represents a deliberate departure from the warmer, spicier territory of classic men's perfumery.
The composition is built around a molecule called sclarene, a modern aromatic that contributes a distinctive metallic quality to the fragrance. It's an unusual choice for a green composition, giving H24 its almost mineral coolness. Narcissus absolute adds a dense, earthy floral underneath, the kind that smells like turned soil after rain. Rosewood and clary sage keep the profile rooted in something recognizably botanical. The result is a green fragrance that doesn't smell like a garden. It smells like a greenhouse engineered to precision, all clean lines and controlled humidity.
The evolution
The first ten minutes are electric. A bright, almost metallic green rushes in, sharp and cool, like biting into something cold and slightly bitter. It reads synthetic but not cheap, more like the smell of a well-designed lobby than a laboratory. Within thirty minutes, the clary sage and rosewood settle in, softening the metallic edge into something warmer and more human. The narcissus arrives late, a dense floral undertone that anchors the composition without ever making it heavy. As the hours pass, the fragrance becomes quieter, a skin-close blend of warm wood and soft green. The initial metallic brightness fades into something more subdued, leaving behind a faint, creamy warmth. The ghost of the rosewood stays close, with just a trace of that initial metallic shimmer remaining.
Cultural impact
H24 marked a shift in how Hermès approaches men's fragrance, introducing something sharper and more contemporary than the house's previous offerings. The fragrance presents a green composition that feels distinctly modern, offering an alternative to the heavier, spicier scents that dominate much of men's perfumery. It earned the Fragrance Foundation's Men's Prestige award in 2022, acknowledging its contribution to the category. The scent's appeal lies partly in its clean, almost architectural quality, a precision that feels intentional rather than accidental.
