The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
H&M's fragrance programme treats scent the way the brand treats a summer drop: seasonal, wearable, easy to try. Above the Clouds arrived in 2018, composed by Nisrine Bouazzaoui Grillié. The brief was uncomplicated. Take the idea of clean laundry, the kind of scent that makes a room feel cared for, and build a composition around it. The result is a straightforward blend of cotton flower at the top, rose and pink pepper through the middle, musk and amber underneath. There is no exotic raw material on the list, and nothing about the composition strains to impress. Instead, the fragrance holds to a single, recognizable idea, and lets that idea carry the whole experience.
Cotton flower is the conceptual anchor of the entire composition, a note built to evoke freshly laundered linen and the cool, starchy scent of fabric that has dried in open air. It is not a single botanical extracted from a plant but a constructed accord, the kind of engineered note that fragrance houses reach for when they want to suggest a textile rather than a flower. When it sits next to rose and pink pepper, something interesting happens to the texture.
The evolution
The opening belongs almost entirely to cotton flower. It reads bright and slightly synthetic, the way a brand-new towel does before it's been washed a dozen times. There is a starchy, almost papery quality to it, as if the note is trying to recreate the smell of fabric rather than anything that grows in a garden. The rose arrives slowly, not as a floral statement but as a softening, rounding the laundry note into something warmer and more lived-in. The pink pepper stays subtle, present mostly as a cool lift in the background rather than a detectable spice, more of a sensation than a flavor. The drydown is warm and quiet, dominated by the musk, which settles into a clean skin-like haze that feels intimate and close. One reviewer noted that on their skin the scent dissolved into nothingness after about an hour, a reminder that longevity is not this fragrance's strongest quality.
Cultural impact
Above the Clouds occupies a recognizable corner of the contemporary fragrance market, the territory of clean, laundry-inspired scents that have become a category in their own right. On community databases like Parfumo, the fragrance is frequently grouped with similar compositions that share its fresh, textile-like character. It does not innovate within the genre, nor does it attempt to push the idea in a new direction. What it offers is a direct, uncomplicated take on a concept that has been explored at many price points across the industry, from boutique houses to mass-market body care lines.
