The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
The Lesedi La Rona collection takes its name from the 1,109-carat rough diamond Graff acquired in 2017 from Botswana's Karowe mine. Its name means Our Light in Setswana. Graff's craftsmen spent months planning the faceting, ultimately producing multiple stones exceeding 300 carats. The collection translates this emotional resonance into olfactory form, six scents, each representing a different facet of a rare gemstone. For the second fragrance, Pascal Gaurin worked with a specific tension: the crystalline sharpness of neroli and Sichuan pepper against the soft warmth of cashmeran and vanilla. Neither element dominates. The scent holds both.
The neroli and petitgrain pairing is what sets this apart from typical citrus fragrances. Moroccan neroli oil carries a honeyed, slightly bitter quality that isn't bright orange, it's closer to a cold-pressed floral oil with real depth. Paired with lemon petitgrain's green, woody freshness and Sichuan pepper's subtle prickliness, the top doesn't spike or disappear. Instead it lingers, informing the drydown. The cashmeran in the base is doing something interesting too, it's warm and soft without being heavy, giving the scent its powdery, close-to-skin character rather than projection.
The evolution
The opening arrives fast, Moroccan neroli's bright, slightly bitter citrus with lemon petitgrain's green woodiness creating an immediate Mediterranean feel. Then the Sichuan pepper announces itself: a clean, tingly prickle that makes the neroli feel more crystalline, not hotter. The citrus doesn't fade so much as cool, becoming translucent as the heart builds. The heart itself is soft. Peony arrives with a powdery, rosy quality while orange blossom absolute adds depth, honeyed, warm, slightly indolic. The Sichuan pepper doesn't disappear. It sits underneath, grounding the florals with a subtle warmth. The handoff to the drydown takes about two hours. Cashmeran arrives first, wrapping everything in its soft, cashmere-like texture. Musk follows, skin-warm, intimate. Vanilla adds a whisper of cream. This stage lasts. Most wearers report six to eight hours of that warm, powdery, close-to-skin finish. Nothing projects. Everything whispers.
Cultural impact
Lesedi La Rona II belongs to Graff's six-fragrance Lesedi La Rona collection, each representing a different facet of the 302.37-carat diamond acquired in 2017. The collection targets the collector who understands that true rarity doesn't announce itself. This second fragrance appeals to wearers seeking a citrus-floral composition that balances crystalline brightness with warm, powdery discretion, sophisticated enough for those who recognize what it is without needing it announced.
