The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Givenchy's Play line has always been about provocation dressed in elegance. The original Play arrived in 2008 with a bold, a little cheeky, unmistakably Givenchy presence. The City flankers came in 2013 as a limited-edition urban twist, translating that same restless energy into something more metropolitan, more kinetic. Play in the City for Him takes the structure of its predecessors and filters it through the lens of a city after dark, where the rules shift and the night rewards the prepared. The scent carries that same irreverent spirit, turning familiar materials into something that catches attention without trying.
What makes this one interesting is the licorice. In perfumery, it's a polarizing material, the same compound (anethole) that makes ouzo ouzo. Here, it's not hiding. The citrus opens bright enough to frame it, give it somewhere to live, but the licorice is the point. It sits on top like a black ribbon, sweet and slightly medicinal, before the iris and amyris wood arrive to smooth the edges. The combination of sweet-bright and powdery-wood creates a scent that feels simultaneously playful and sophisticated, offering something that doesn't fit neatly into the usual masculine fragrance categories.
The evolution
The opening is immediate: citrus oil and licorice, almost confectionary in their brightness. For the first twenty minutes, it reads more candy shop than couture house. Then the hand-off begins, the citrus fades, the licorice softens into something earthier, and the iris appears. Not sharp or cleaning-product iris, but a warm, powdery iris that smells like the inside of a vintage watch case. Amyris wood adds a creamy, slightly honeyed texture underneath. By hour two, you're in the drydown: amber and woods, intimate, close to the skin. It doesn't project far at this point, but it lingers, wrapping around the wearer in a way that feels personal and composed.
Cultural impact
The Play line occupies a specific corner of Givenchy's masculine portfolio: younger, more playful, less formal than Gentleman. Play in the City for Him draws from that same playful spirit while adding an urban edge. The scent speaks to those who appreciate fragrance as a form of self-expression, something that can shift from unexpected brightness to intimate warmth as the hours pass. It's a composition that rewards attention, revealing different facets as the notes evolve throughout wear.
