The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Not Your Type lands in 2026 as a warm floral, a composition that reads deeper than its label suggests. It pulls from oud-driven structures, then softens the architecture with iris and vanilla until the whole thing feels like its own category entirely. The opening has that rare quality of being both immediate and layered, a scent that doesn't ask for attention so much as it simply takes up space. At first spray, the iris is front and center, cool and mineral, almost like crushed velvet on skin. Beneath it, vanilla cream builds a whipped softness that carries warmth without tipping into sweetness. As the minutes pass, the oud steps forward, smoky and resinous, giving the composition a gravitational pull that keeps everything anchored.
The interesting move here is the pairing of white suede with oud. White suede lends a tactile softness, a suede-like impression that usually anchors the heart of soft ambers or clean musks, and putting it next to oud is a collision worth noting. Add labdanum and tonka for warmth, iris for the powdery cool, vanilla cream for that whipped sweetness, and the result is a composition that refuses to pick a lane between gourmand and woody. Labdanum brings an ambered resin, sticky and golden, while tonka leans into a nutty softness, almost almond-like, that rounds out the sharper edges of the oud.
The evolution
The first ten minutes feel almost like a skin scent, powdery iris meeting the whipped softness of vanilla cream. There's a quietness to the opening that doesn't announce itself. Then the labdanum rises, bringing a resinous warmth that thickens the composition without overwhelming it. The white suede arrives somewhere around the 30 minute mark, and the texture shifts, softer, more tactile, like running a hand across something expensive. By hour two, the oud has settled in underneath everything, not loud, but unmistakable, giving the drydown a depth the opening only hinted at. The amber and patchouli anchor the final hours, warm and a little smoky, close to the skin. What lingers past hour six is a quiet mix of suede and oud, still present on fabric the morning after, still doing its work long after you've stopped noticing it.
Cultural impact
Not Your Type taps into a growing appetite for fragrances that feel composed rather than loud, scents that change the temperature of a room rather than filling it. The composition speaks to a shift in how oud-adjacent profiles are being approached, with iris and vanilla cream softening the traditional gravitas of oud into something more approachable. White suede adds a tactile dimension that reads as quiet luxury, while labdanum and tonka give it the warmth that keeps the whole thing grounded. There's a kind of quiet disruption in the way the notes refuse to settle into a single category, woody yet gourmand, powdery yet resinous.
