The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Anne-Sophie Behaghel created Joli Coeur in 2021 for Fiilit, naming it after the island of La Reunion in the Indian Ocean. In French, 'joli coeur' means 'pretty heart', an affectionate nickname for someone beloved. But on Reunion Island, the name also refers to a native tree whose leaves carry a fragrant signature. The island itself is volcanic, green, and lush, producing Bourbon vanilla that grows in rich volcanic soil. That terroir, that specific place, is what this fragrance translates into scent. Not a memory of the island. The island itself, condensed.
The composition keeps its structure deliberately simple. Five materials, working in concert. The dark cacao opens unsweetened and almost bitter, closer to baking cocoa than chocolate candy. That astringency meets roasted almond, and together they create a gourmand opening that feels like actual baking rather than a dessert menu. The tonka bean arrives next, softening the edges and introducing its creamy, warm coumarin character. Caramel follows, not as sticky syrup but as warm toffee. The vanilla and caramel base rounds everything into a finish that reviewers call 'edible', the kind of sweetness that makes strangers ask what you're wearing.
The evolution
The opening hits sharp and dark, cacao and almond colliding with an intensity that borders on bitter. Within the first hour, the tonka bean softens the harsh edges, revealing a creamy caramel warmth that takes over. The next several hours belong to vanilla, which settles into the skin and projects moderately outward, creating an intimate but noticeable presence. By the end, the composition becomes less about distinct notes and more about a unified sweetness that lingers close to the skin, the kind that stays with you through evening hours and into the next morning. What surprises wearers is the cacao's longevity, it doesn't disappear after the opening. It fades, yes, but it never fully leaves. The base has memory.
Cultural impact
Collectors and gourmand enthusiasts have embraced Joli Coeur as an accessible entry point into the genre. Community ratings place it among Fiilit's most popular releases, with particular praise for its edible quality and warm vanilla drydown. The straightforward sweetness, no surprises, no complexity, just commitment, has made it a recommendation for those seeking their first niche fragrance or an alternative to designer gourmand offerings.
