The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Oud Exquisite joined Elegantes' portfolio in 2017, a London house that had launched five years earlier, though sources don't confirm that founding year. The name does exactly what it promises. Where many houses treat oud as an accent, an afterthought, a drop of something expensive in a crowd of safer notes, Elegantes built the entire composition around it. Everything else is scaffolding for that one material. Julien Rasquinet, the perfumer behind the formula, constructed a tight weave of leather, labdanum, and gurjan balsam as the structural frame. The oud sits central, flanked by castoreum for that animal warmth, cypriol for the earthy, rooty depth, and Indonesian patchouli to keep the whole thing grounded in soil rather than air. There is no citrus to soften the edges.
What makes this composition earn its name is the refusal to dilute. Gurjan balsam, a resin most modern compositions use as a whisper, gets real volume here. It pairs with labdanum to build that amber-leather scaffolding. The castoreum does work that most houses avoid altogether, lending that lived-in, animalic undertone that reads as warmth rather than musk. The cypriol and Indonesian patchouli do the heavy lifting where other oud fragrances rely on rose or saffron to bridge the gap. There is no sweetener here.
The evolution
The opening is immediate. Leather and labdanum land first, dry and a little sharp, with the gurjan balsam adding a warm resin glow underneath. There is no bright spark to distract you. The smoke starts here too, woven through the leather from the start rather than saving itself for later. Around thirty minutes in, the oud starts speaking. It doesn't announce itself with the barnyard intensity of some compositions. It settles into the leather instead, darkening it, thickening it, giving the structure weight. Castoreum adds that low animalic hum underneath, the part you feel more than smell. Cypriol and patchouli have been present since the opening but now they come forward, grounding everything in something earthy and root-like. The drydown is where the gurjan balsam and labdanum take full credit.
Cultural impact
Oud Exquisite wears like something made for people who already know what oud can be. The dense leather-smoke-resin construction rewards patience, the kind of composition that reveals more the longer you sit with it. It doesn't chase trends or try to soften its edges for broader appeal. What it offers instead is a fully realized vision of oud as the central material, supported by a structure that lets it develop without interference. The refusal to add sweeteners or bridging notes like rose or saffron sets it apart from much of what fills the oud category.
