The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
David Yurman's Essence collection began in 2011, an exploration of scent as sculptural object, each fragrance a study in form and restraint. Summer Essence arrived the following year, designed to capture the particular brightness of warm-season living: longer days, lighter wardrobes, the shift in mood that arrives with heat. Perfumer Ralf Schwieger built this one with the everyday in mind, not the special occasion, but the Thursday afternoon that deserves something good on your skin.
The note structure here rewards attention. Three top notes, apple blossom, nashi pear, peach nectar, create a fruity introduction that's soft rather than piercing, achieved through careful balance rather than sweetness overload. The heart introduces green florals (hyacinth, lily of the valley) alongside orchid's slightly exotic warmth, pushing back against pure sweetness. The base of white musk, sandalwood, and crystal amber anchors everything in warmth without heaviness, the drydown of a fragrance that knows when to step back.
The evolution
The opening arrives fresh and immediately appealing, apple blossom and nashi pear creating a clean, sweet impression that feels effortless rather than constructed. Within the first hour, the hyacinth and lily of the valley take over, introducing a green, slightly dewy quality that cuts through the sweetness and adds dimension. The heart holds for several hours, maintaining that balance between floral sweetness and green crispness. The drydown reveals white musk and sandalwood, warmer, softer, with crystal amber adding a faint luminous quality. Sillage stays moderate throughout; projection is never aggressive. What lingers is clean, close to the skin, present for most of a workday.
Cultural impact
Summer Essence arrived during a period when the perfume market was shifting toward lighter, more personal fragrances. David Yurman, better known for jewelry, released this fruity-floral as part of a deliberate move to capture the everyday luxury segment. The 2012 launch date places it squarely in an era when consumers were drawn to accessible luxury, approachable scents that felt like an upgrade rather than a statement. Summer Essence found its audience among women seeking polished, versatile wear without committing to anything bold or polarizing.
