The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Elderberry Punch comes from Damask Haus, released in 2021 with Bri Beyer credited as the perfumer behind it. It belongs to the brand's Global Libations collection, a series built around beverages as inspiration for fragrance. The idea is straightforward: take a drink and rebuild it into something you can wear, letting the original ingredients guide the composition. Elderberry Punch takes the idea of an elderberry cordial and strips it down to its bracing essentials. The elderberry's natural tartness leads the way, with the herbal lift of basil threading through it. Citrus zest rounds out the structure, bright and sharp without veering into anything candied or syrupy.
What's interesting here is the restraint. Elderberry Punch doesn't round off the elderberry's natural edges the way many compositions might, skipping the heavy sweetness that often gets layered onto dark fruit notes. The result is something that leans into the elderberry's natural character, presenting it as it is rather than cushioning it. Basil does more work than you'd expect from a supporting player, acting as a bridge between the elderberry's sharper qualities and the citrus zest that keeps everything lifted and present on the skin.
The evolution
The opening is all snap. Grapefruit juice and orange zest hit bright and immediate, with no syrupy undertone to soften the landing. The citrus stays sharp in the first minutes, with basil threading underneath like a green accent dropped into the mix. As the composition settles, the elderberry starts to assert itself, darkening the fruit profile from bright citrus into something deeper and more complex. The grapefruit doesn't vanish at this stage; it just stops leading. Instead it circles back in waves while the elderberry takes the wheel, adding a warmth and density that wasn't there at the start. The transition from opening to heart phase feels deliberate, each note stepping forward and then receding in turn. The drydown is where it surprises. The basil reasserts itself, greener and more grounded than in the opening, and the citrus flattens into a softer zest impression.
Cultural impact
Elderberry Punch stands out in the beverage-inspired fragrance space because of its refusal to soften the elderberry into something more conventionally appealing. The Global Libations collection treats drinks as raw material for composition, and Elderberry Punch is one of the line's more direct entries, working with elderberry, basil, and grapefruit as its three central ingredients without anything to buffer them. The result reads less as a flavored novelty and more as a serious composition that happens to be built around a drink.
