The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Origine arrives as part of Carma Profvmvm's debut seven, released in 2026. The house calls its opening lineup a manifesto rather than a catalogue, and Origine reads like the most inward-facing of that group. Where most debuts announce themselves, this one leans closer. The name itself, Italian for "origin," sets the brief: strip back to the source. On skin, the scent delivers exactly that kind of reductive clarity. Iris arrives front-loaded, cool and almost mineral, carrying a dry violet shadow that never tips into candy. Leather enters low and supple, the kind that suggests glove rather than saddle. Cardamom threads warmth through the composition without ever reading as spicy or sharp. Sandalwood and cedar arrive in the base, their creaminess grounding the powder so it never feels chalky.
The note structure does something specific. Violet and cardamom bracket iris and leather, reshaping what a leather composition can feel like. Violet softens the leather's edge, while cardamom's warm spice cuts the powder's sweetness. Cedar and sandalwood ground it without turning woody, and the musk underneath reads skin-warm, not synthetic. The iris never becomes soapy or root-like. Instead it holds a buttery, almost suede-like softness that flatters the leather rather than competing with it.
The evolution
The opening is the loudest Origine ever gets. Cardamom lifts off first, bright and almost green, joined quickly by violet's cooler edge. Soon the iris steps in and the composition quiets. Powder settles, the leather softens from something that could have been a jacket to something closer to a glove. The middle phase belongs to cedar and sandalwood, both playing supporting roles while the iris stays front and center, dusty and dry. The musk gradually absorbs everything underneath, pulling the composition closer to skin. What remains is a skin-close warmth, faintly sweet from the powder, with leather still recognizable but no longer assertive. The drydown keeps the violet's trace alive in a hushed, almost ghostly way. The iris loses its mineral edge and becomes rounder, more nuzzled into the warmth of the base.
Cultural impact
Origine arrived in 2026 as one of seven opening compositions from Carma Profvmvm. The brand's visual language, anchored in classical Roman typography and restrained design, positioned it as a house interested in editorial presentation. Origine anchored that first portfolio with its iris-and-leather profile, a combination that gave the debut a recognizable signature. Among fragrance writers who covered the launch, the response noted the composition's restraint and its willingness to favor texture over projection.
