The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Lake arrived in 2019. Rosie Jane Johnston had been considering what fall at Lake Tahoe smells like when launching the brand. The fragrance captures a morning atmosphere where mist rises from cold water. The air carries crispness alongside a subtle warmth that develops as the day progresses. This isn't a landscape portrait but rather an interpretation of the place, translating its quiet intimacy into something wearable that rewards attention.
Every note in Lake earns its place. Bergamot opens bright, bringing clarity to the composition without artificial amplification. Vanilla provides warmth without sweetness becoming dominant. Cedar grounds the blend without relying on synthetic musk compounds. Fir needle adds a forest quality that prevents the wood notes from becoming linear. The materials selected for this fragrance don't need to shout to make an impression.
The evolution
Bergamot and orange zest arrive together, crisp, clear, almost austere. Lemon adds a brief flash of sharpness that fades quickly. Amber emerges as the bridge, its resinous warmth softening what citrus started. Bourbon vanilla slides in quietly, not sweet exactly, more like warmth without texture. Neroli does something subtle, tempering the vanilla. Three hours in, white cedar becomes prominent, but it avoids being sharp or artificial. Balsam fir adds a forest quality, not the typical evergreen association. Sandalwood provides a foundation that persists when the other notes have said their piece. The vanilla settles lower, becoming part of the base rather than the heart. Hours later, only the sandalwood and a trace of vanilla remain, close to skin, the kind of subtle presence that someone notices when they're already close to you.
Cultural impact
Clean fragrance has gained mainstream attention, but by/rosie jane built its audience before the category exploded. Lake fits into the broader clean beauty movement. People want transparency about what they're putting on their skin. The scent invites discovery rather than demanding attention, making it suitable for close interactions rather than filling a space.
