The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Chasing Memories is a 2020 composition from Broken Anatomy Perfumes, composed by Ryan Handis. Its concept borrows directly from a private kind of nostalgia: the experience of relaxation and togetherness. Think of the specific moment after effort ends, when the air shifts and you settle back into your own skin. The brand framed it as a bite of sparkling grapefruit tasted through a floral summer breeze over a warm towel. That's not a marketing line. It's an instruction for how to wear this. The composition was designed to be close, personal, and emotionally immediate rather than bold or projection-heavy. The grapefruit opens bright and almost effervescent, buoyed by bergamot that sharpens the citrus into something more luminous than sweet.
The note structure reveals a deliberate choice: white musk and orange blossom repeat across top, heart, and base, anchoring the composition while the brighter citrus notes come and go. This repetition creates the skin-like quality the brand described. Orris root and iris add a powdery, slightly suede-like texture that makes the fragrance feel like it belongs on fabric and warm skin rather than floating in the air. The sandalwood is a quiet foundation, smooth rather than creamy, supporting without weighing anything down. Grapefruit and bergamot serve as entry points but were never meant to linger.
The evolution
The first ten minutes belong to grapefruit and bergamot, sharp and almost fizzy against the warmth of orange blossom absolute. That citrus brightness fades faster than you'd expect, not because it's weak, but because the musk underneath is already taking over. By the thirty-minute mark the composition has shifted into a powdery, floral warmth where iris and orris root give everything a soft, blurred edge. The orange blossom sticks around but loses its sweetness, becoming more about texture than scent. Two hours in and the sandalwood begins to show itself, quiet and smooth, the way a familiar voice sounds in a quiet room. The drydown is where this fragrance earns its reputation: white musk, slightly sweet, slightly soapy, intimate enough that someone next to you notices before you do.
Cultural impact
Chasing Memories arrived in 2020 and found its audience through independent fragrance reviewers and online niche communities rather than mainstream retail. The 'chasing memories' concept, relaxation and togetherness rendered as scent, gave wearers something tangible to reach for, a way to summon a feeling through fragrance rather than simply decorate the air around them. The opening citrus of grapefruit and bergamot reads almost like a flash of recognition, bright and immediate, before the orange blossom softens everything into a warmer, more reflective register.
