The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Quadrifoglio, Italian for four-leaf clover, is the thirteenth entry in Bottega Veneta's Parco Palladiano collection, each fragrance named after the Palladian gardens of the Veneto region. Aurélien Guichard wanted to capture something specific: the hour when those formal Italian gardens exist in transition, between night and full morning, between shadow and light. The composition opens with crisp, sunlit herbs and gradually settles into something deeper, the way early morning light reveals new dimensions of a familiar landscape. The basil reads as freshly crushed, bright and slightly spiced, while the incense provides a warm, smoky counterpoint that never overwhelms. This is green without the usual aquatic or ozonic shortcuts. It is herbal but not austere, grounded but never heavy.
What makes this composition unusual is the pairing of basil with incense. One is sharp and vegetable-green, the other is resinous and contemplative. The structure here keeps them in tension rather than merging them. The incense never dominates; it arrives quiet, settles underneath the green, and acts as ballast. The basil opens crisp and aromatic, its green character bright and immediate, while the incense provides depth without darkness.
The evolution
The opening announces itself quickly: grapefruit and bergamot give brightness, but the basil arrives within minutes, cutting through the citrus with its savory, slightly anise edge. It smells like crushed leaves, not the dried herb, there's moisture in it. The grapefruit fades first, leaving the bergamot and basil as the primary conversation for the next hour or so. The heart introduces geranium's faint rose and the green notes deepen, but the overall character stays light. The incense announces itself properly in the base, around the two-hour mark, when the initial green begins to soften. Then smoke, Iso E Super's clean wood, and amberwood's warm drydown. The final hours are intimate, coumarin's hay-like sweetness, smoke that lingers close to the skin. The next morning, there's a faint trace on fabric. Not projection, memory.
Cultural impact
Quadrifoglio occupies a particular space within the Bottega Veneta fragrance line, offering green without the usual aquatic or ozonic interpretations. The incense in the base adds complexity that makes it wearable in cooler evenings, not just warm mornings. The fragrance combines crisp, aromatic herbs with warm, smoky undertones, creating a tension that holds attention without demanding it. Basil brings a vegetable-green brightness that feels immediate and alive, while the incense provides resinous depth that grounds the composition and prevents it from becoming too light.
