The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Zoe by Ezra arrived in 2013 as part of BENCH/'s growing fragrance portfolio, a label that extended its identity beyond clothing into something you could wear on skin. The scent sits within Ezra's collection, one of the collaborations that helped BENCH/ build out a wider beauty wardrobe around its core apparel business. True to that broader direction, it reads as everyday style, accessible, wearable, and tied to personal expression. The composition leans into bright fruit and clean florals, with blackcurrant and grapefruit opening sharp and slightly tart, lily of the valley drifting in at the edges, and a soft musky wood base that settles in close.
What makes this composition interesting is its structure. The same trio opens and carries through the heart. Blackcurrant, grapefruit, and lily of the valley don't just announce the scent, they hold the middle while the base quietly assembles underneath. This layered approach means the freshness isn't decorative. It's the foundation, and the woody-musk drydown has something real to settle into rather than just replacing brightness with warmth.
The evolution
The first ten minutes are loud in the best way. Blackcurrant hits sharp and slightly tart, grapefruit slices in clean, and lily of the valley drifts around the edges like someone left a window open. Around the thirty-minute mark, the white floral steps forward and the fruit softens. You get the impression the scent is settling into work clothes, trading some of its opening brightness for a calmer, more blended character. By hour two, the wood and musk have built a quiet floor underneath everything. The freshness doesn't disappear, it just stops being the headline. The florals and the woods carry on together for a stretch, with the lily of the valley giving the drydown a soft soapy edge that keeps it from ever feeling heavy. As the hours pass, the musk rounds off the sharper edges and the whole thing drifts into a warm, slightly creamy haze.
Cultural impact
Zoe by Ezra arrived in 2013 as part of BENCH/'s expansion from clothing into scent, a category move that opened up a new way for the label to connect with its audience. The fragrance found its place within that shift, a bright cassis and grapefruit opening paired with a soft lily of the valley heart and a clean musky wood base, a profile that felt right at home in a tropical climate and in the everyday routines of the people who already wore the brand.
