The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Marshmallows Brawl! arrived in 2017 as part of Arcana Craves' Marshmallows Attack! collection. The brand built its whole identity around pairing a familiar comfort object with an unexpected olfactory turn, and this one leans into that formula harder than most. A sugary puff in the title, then Haitian vetiver, black musk, and soil in the bottle. The notes read like a dare. A confection that promises pillow-soft comfort on the front of the label, then turns around and drags in a vetiver root, a dark musk accord, and the unmistakable grit of soil. The contrast between the marshmallow's pale, puffy sweetness and these earthier, almost feral notes is the central idea of the composition. Nothing about this is accidental or designed to please everyone.
What makes the composition unusual is the structural choice. The grounding layer is two musks, black musk and a second musk note, plus Haitian vetiver. That bottom tier pulls the sugar downward instead of letting it float. The marshmallow note doesn't get to behave like a candy shop. It gets pinned to the darker base. Then the sour cherry and rum cherry keep poking at it, preventing the composition from settling into pure comfort. The result is something the nose can't quite file away as dessert, even though that's where the brand clearly started.
The evolution
The first ten minutes belong to the marshmallow. The sugar is cool and powdery, with a pale sweetness that sits close to the skin rather than radiating outward. Then the Haitian vetiver shoulders in, and the whole thing tips earthy. The sugar doesn't leave, but it starts behaving like it's been buried. By the second hour, the black musk takes over, and the sweetness has compressed into something almost resinous, sitting on the skin like a dark, sticky residue. The sour cherry shows up intermittently through hours three and four, a sharp flicker that cuts across the heavier base and reminds you the candy element hasn't fully surrendered. By hour six, it's mostly musk and vetiver, close to the skin, slightly dirty, surprisingly warm. The next morning on a scarf, you catch soil and the ghost of marshmallow.
Cultural impact
Marshmallows Brawl! sits within a corner of indie perfumery where small-batch houses treat gourmand materials as serious building blocks rather than easy crowd-pleasers. Arcana Craves built its catalog around the idea that sweet notes can hold heavier, stranger things underneath, and the Marshmallows Attack! series, including siblings like Marshmallows Drown!, leans into that approach directly. Marshmallows Brawl! pairs sugary sweetness with black musk, Haitian vetiver, and literal soil accords to create a tension between comfort and grit that defines the collection's overall mood.
