The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Jérôme Epinette collaborated with the Robertet house in 2014 to create Botanic Whisper for And Other Stories, a Stockholm-based fashion brand under the H&M Group known for curating editorial-forward accessories and fragrances. The brief was to extend the brand's considered aesthetic into scent without producing a statement fragrance. Epinette worked with Robertet's raw materials to craft something that layers rather than shouts. Grapefruit, mandarin orange, and coriander form the opening, chosen for their immediate clarity and freshness. The floral heart was built around Ylang-Ylang, Gardenia, and Magnolia to evoke a greenhouse garden at midday. The drydown uses musk and plum to anchor the composition to skin, rather than to linger in a room.
The note selection reflects a deliberate restraint. Coriander was used not for its full herbal intensity but to introduce a fleeting green-spice dimension that prevents the citrus from feeling like a generic opener. Ylang-ylang and gardenia in the heart were chosen for their complementary textures: one creamy, one waxy, both with enough presence to anchor the composition after the citrus fades. Plum in the drydown serves a structural purpose rather than a decorative one. It adds a dark counterweight to the florals, creating contrast that makes the transition from heart to base feel intentional rather than abrupt.
The evolution
The fragrance begins with a sharp citrus burst. Grapefruit arrives first, lending a tart, almost bitter edge. Mandarin orange follows, softening the acidity with its sweeter, juicier character. Coriander tempers the citrus with a faint herbal spice, creating a green counterpoint. Within the heart phase, ylang-ylang introduces itself as a creamy, tropical sweetness. Gardenia amplifies the waxy richness of white florals, while magnolia adds a watery, translucent freshness that keeps the heart from becoming too dense. As the drydown approaches, the florals fade and the composition narrows. Musk provides a clean, skin-friendly base that feels barely there. Plum lingers in the background, offering a dark, slightly tart finish that rounds the fragrance without adding sweetness.
Cultural impact
Botanic Whisper exists in a specific niche, accessible fragrance with enough complexity to reward attention. It sits alongside other editorial-adjacent body mists from fashion-adjacent brands, appealing to wearers who want something more considered than drugstore options but less commitment than full-strength niche releases. The combination of green-citrus and white florals positions it as a warm-weather option, though the musk base gives it year-round flexibility.
