The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
In 2024, Aether released Sugær as a statement: synthetic molecules deserve center stage. Ethyl maltol takes a leading role in the composition, elevated beyond typical use. Perfumer Julien Rasquinet built the structure around this choice, selecting hazelnut and cocoa to add texture and warmth, vanilla absolute and tonka bean for depth, and benzoin with sandalwood as the structural base. The hazelnut and cocoa interact in a way that creates a nutty, textured sweetness, while the vanilla and tonka bean add a lingering depth that extends the experience. Benzoin and sandalwood provide a smooth, warm foundation that extends the wear while keeping the overall character clear and coherent.
Hazelnut and cocoa serve as equal partners in the composition, not decorations. Vanilla absolute, tonka bean, and benzoin add warmth without diluting the clarity. The interaction between these notes creates a textured, enveloping quality that builds over time. Hazelnut and cocoa work together to establish a nutty, warm base, while the vanilla and tonka bean enhance the sweetness with a soft, resinous quality. Benzoin grounds the composition, ensuring the fragrance remains cohesive and lingering.
The evolution
Sugær opens with an immediate burst of caramelized sugar, ethyl maltol announcing itself without ceremony. The sweetness reads clean, almost clinical in its precision. Hazelnut and cocoa arrive next, trading places in a warm handoff that carries through the middle phases. The heart softens but doesn't disappear; vanilla and tonka bean settle into the skin, creating a warmth that lingers. By the end, Sugær becomes a trace, something intimate and close, the kind of scent that stays with you into the next morning. The projection is subtle, creating a presence that remains close to the wearer.
Cultural impact
The molecule-forward composition appeals to those who appreciate Aether's scientific approach to perfumery. The fragrance invites curiosity about what synthetic ingredients can achieve when given space to develop fully. It's a composition that rewards the wearer who wants to understand what they're experiencing rather than simply enjoying it.
