The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Stefano Frecceri created Violetta Extreme in 2008 as part of the La Superba collection, Acqua di Genova's ongoing study of Italian florals. The collection takes its name from Genoa's nickname, 'La Superba,' and each fragrance in it explores a different botanical through the house's classical lens. Violetta Extreme was designed as just that: an extreme interpretation of the violet, pushed further than the traditional cologne approach would allow. The brand had worked with violet since at least the twentieth century, sourcing from regions known for quality, but this was something bolder, a concentrated declaration where the flower wouldn't politely wait its turn in the pyramid. Instead, it opens.
What makes Violetta Extreme notable is the way it handles violet without the typical green-stem or cold-water interpretation. Instead of the refreshing aquatic violet that appears in many light florals, this version goes straight to the powdered heart of the flower, the petals, yes, but also the powder that gathers in a velvet-lined case. Mirabelle bridges the gap between fruit and flower, adding a honeyed quality that keeps the violet from reading as austere. Jasmine doesn't compete with the violet; it supports it, adding body to the white floral heart without overwhelming the composition.
The evolution
The opening arrives quietly. Neroli and mirabelle together create a soft citrus glow, not sharp, not soapy, but golden. There's a brief moment of sweetness before the violet steps forward, and when it does, it doesn't announce itself. It settles. Jasmine joins within the first few minutes, and suddenly the composition is fully formed: powdery violet, white floral warmth, a hint of fruit beneath. The transition is smooth, almost seamless, no gap between top and heart. As the hours pass, the jasmine fades first, leaving violet and sandalwood to carry the middle act. The sandalwood grows warmer, creamier, as if responding to skin heat. Amber arrives late, tying everything together with a subtle sweetness that keeps the drydown from going dry. On fabric, the violet lingers longest, a soft powdery presence that can be detected the next day. On skin, it settles closer, intimate rather than announced. This is a fragrance for proximity, not projection.
Cultural impact
Violetta Extreme has quietly earned a devoted following among those who seek powdery florals done with restraint. Ratings consistently place it among the stronger expressions in the La Superba collection, with particular praise for how the violet character develops over time rather than fading quickly.
