The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Marqueyssac takes its name from one of the most romantic formal gardens in southwest France, a centuries-old landscape of clipped boxwood, cascading waterfalls and valley views near the Dordogne. The garden's history dates to the 1860s, when 150,000 boxwood plants were set into geometric patterns that have since grown into living architecture. When Les 12 Parfumeurs Français chose to honor it in 2016, the brief was simple: translate the garden's atmosphere into a fragrance you could wear to it. The result opens with apple and strawberry, bright and lively in the opening moments, before settling into the floral heart that defines the composition's character.
The structure here is unusually balanced for a floral fruity. Rather than a bright opening that collapses into a generic sweet drydown, Marqueyssac uses its fruit notes, apple and strawberry, as an introduction that fades rather than dominates. The heart of freesia, jasmine, and rose arrives not as a replacement but as a softening, a transition that makes the fruit feel like a memory rather than a statement. Then the base does something interesting: it doesn't power forward. Amber, white musk, and sandalwood stay close to the skin, creating a powdery warmth that extends the composition without amplifying it.
The evolution
The first hour is the fruit phase, apple and strawberry arrive together, sweet and almost candied, but not cloying. There's a brightness here that feels like morning in the garden, dew still on the hedges. Around the 45-minute mark the florals begin to assert themselves. Freesia leads, jasmine follows, and the rose appears almost as a whisper, present but never loud. This is the heart of the fragrance, the part that justifies wearing it. The drydown is where Marqueyssac earns its reputation for longevity. The amber and white musk create a powdery warmth that feels intimate rather than announced, lingering close to the skin through the afternoon and into the evening. The sandalwood keeps things grounded, adding a creamy depth that balances the florals. The raspberry in the base is a smart move, it adds a slight tartness that prevents the composition from becoming too sweet as it ages.
Cultural impact
In a category crowded with fragrances that announce themselves loudly, Marqueyssac takes a different approach. Moderate sillage means it works best in intimate settings, dinners, gallery openings, moments where you want to be remembered by the person standing close enough to smell you. The composition prioritizes nuance over projection, offering depth to those who get close enough to discover it. It's a fragrance for people who find joy in details, who appreciate the way a well-crafted scent can become part of a moment without dominating it.
