The Story of True lavender absolute

True lavender absolute captures the soul of Lavandula angustifolia in concentrated form. Extracted through volatile solvent processing from French lavender concrete, this deep blue-green absolute delivers a rich, herbaceous-floral complexity that steam-distilled essential oil cannot replicate.

    Heritage

Lavender use in perfumery stretches back over 2,000 years to ancient Egypt, where the flower served as a perfume and religious incense in rituals. The Romans adopted lavender enthusiastically, incorporating it into herbal baths and perfumed Waters through to its name derivation from the Latin lavare, meaning to wash. Medieval European apothecaries catalogued lavender extensively for its supposed healing properties, keeping it prominent in herbal medicine alongside fragrance applications. By the 19th century, commercial cultivation had solidified around Provence, France, where chalky alkaline soils and Mediterranean climate produce Lavender with exceptionally high ester content. Modern perfumery elevated true lavender from a simple fresh note to a nuanced perfumery material prized by niche fragrance houses for its complex herbaceous-floral character that synthetic lavender alternatives cannot fully replicate. Today, Lavandula angustifolia from Haute-Provence remains the global benchmark for premium lavender fragrance ingredients.

"The rich blue-green color of true lavender absolute comes from its naturally occurring chamazulene content, a compound formed during extraction that also contributes anti-inflammatory properties."

    Production

How True lavender absolute Is Made

True lavender absolute production follows a two-stage solvent extraction process. Fresh lavender flowering tops are harvested by hand in Provence during peak bloom, typically in July, when linalool and linalyl acetate content peaks. First, volatile solvents typically hexane extract the plant material to produce a waxy concrete. That concrete undergoes a second extraction with ethanol to remove waxes and pigments. After ethanol recovery under vacuum, the remaining liquid yields the absolute upon chilling and filtration. The result is a pourable, viscous absolute with a deep blue-green hue that traces its color to naturally occurring chamazulene. This two-step process captures aromatic molecules that steam distillation would leave behind, particularly heavier sesquiterpenes and botanical waxes that give the absolute its superior substantivity in fragrance formulations.
