    The Story of Cypress root

Cypress root anchors fragrance with its deep, resinous warmth. Beneath the Mediterranean cypress's noble silhouette lies a subterranean aromatic treasure that perfumers have prized for centuries.

    Heritage

The Mediterranean cypress has held sacred significance across ancient civilizations. Egyptian priests used cypress-derived materials in temple rituals, while Greek mythology linked the tree to mourning, associating it with the underworld god Hades. The Romans planted cypress groves around temples and tombs, valuing the tree's evergreen nature as a symbol of eternal life. Ancient perfumers likely discovered the aromatic potential of cypress roots through observation of how the wood burned and released scent during funeral rites. Throughout the centuries, Mediterranean cultures incorporated cypress root preparations into medicinal remedies before its application in perfumery became established. By the Renaissance, French and Italian perfumers began systematically using aromatic plant roots, including cypress, as fixatives that extended fragrance longevity on skin.

    Production

    How Cypress root Is Made

Cypress roots are harvested from Cupressus sempervirens trees in their second or third year of growth, typically during late autumn when aromatic concentration peaks. The roots are carefully washed, chopped into small segments, and either steam distilled to produce an essential oil or undergo solvent extraction to yield a concrete and absolute. Steam distillation of cypress root produces a pale yellow to amber oil with a characteristic woody, slightly camphoraceous scent profile. The roots must be properly dried before extraction to prevent mold degradation and ensure optimal oil yield. Typical extraction yields range from 0.2% to 0.8% depending on root maturity and growing conditions. The resulting material carries the earthy, balsamic character that makes cypress root distinctive among woody fragrance ingredients.
