The Story
Why it exists.
Ex Nihilo’s 2014 breakthrough, Fleur Narcotique, defined a modern rose overdose that captured the imagination of perfume lovers worldwide. Building on that momentum, the house asked perfumer Quentin Bisch to revisit the concept with a singular focus on May Rose, the queen of Grasse blooms. Launched in 2021, Signature Rose de Mai isolates the rose’s pure elegance, surrounding it with a fresh fruit prelude of lychee and peach, while keeping the brand’s radical, no‑limits philosophy at its core.

The Beginning
Ex Nihilo’s 2014 breakthrough, Fleur Narcotique, defined a modern rose overdose that captured the imagination of perfume lovers worldwide. Building on that momentum, the house asked perfumer Quentin Bisch to revisit the concept with a singular focus on May Rose, the queen of Grasse blooms. Launched in 2021, Signature Rose de Mai isolates the rose’s pure elegance, surrounding it with a fresh fruit prelude of lychee and peach, while keeping the brand’s radical, no‑limits philosophy at its core.
Choosing lychee and peach as the opening trio adds a juicy, almost edible brightness that lifts the rose, preventing it from feeling heavy. The heart’s blend of peony, jasmine and orange blossom deepens the floral narrative, creating layers that unfold like petals in sunlight. Finally, moss and musk provide a grounding earthiness, a subtle nod to the brand’s love of raw, natural materials, ensuring the scent settles with a soft, lingering whisper.
The Evolution
The first ten minutes greet the wearer with a burst of lychee’s tropical sweetness, quickly followed by the soft fuzz of peach and a crisp bergamot spark that feels like a sunrise over a French orchard. Around the ten‑minute mark, the composition shifts; May Rose unfurls its velvety petals, supported by peony’s powdery grace, jasmine’s luminous amber, and orange blossom’s citrus‑floral lift, creating a heart that feels both intimate and expansive. As the perfume settles past the half‑hour, the bright fruit recedes, giving way to a subtle forest floor where moss introduces an earthy dampness and musk adds a clean, skin‑hugging warmth. This drydown persists for six to eight hours, leaving a faint, moss‑kissed veil that whispers of the garden long after the initial bloom has faded.
Cultural Impact
Since its 2021 arrival, Signature Rose de Mai has become a reference point for contemporary rose fragrances, praised for balancing a juicy fruit opening with a pure May Rose heart. Wearers note its ability to feel fresh enough for daytime yet sophisticated for evening events, positioning it as a versatile staple in the modern perfume wardrobe and cementing Ex Nihilo’s reputation for daring, yet elegant, reinterpretations of classic accords.
