The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Zara's 2019 collaboration with Jo Malone CBE produced a small collection of fragrances built on contrast rather than convention. Gourmand Leather was the outlier, not the clean citrus or fresh aquatic the market expected, but something sweeter, stranger. The brief seemed simple: leather, but make it approachable. The execution was anything but. Iris powder became the bridge between sharp bergamot and the leather that anchors the base, creating a fragrance that smells expensive without trying to.
What makes this composition work is the iris. It's not the earthy, root-like iris of high-niche perfumery, it's iris as powder, as violet softness, as the moment before leather takes over. Paired with tonka's coumarin warmth, it creates a gourmand quality that most leather fragrances actively avoid. The bergamot isn't just citrus, it's the opening that makes the sweetness feel earned rather than imposed. This is a budget fragrance that understood exactly what it was trying to do.
The evolution
The bergamot opens bright and stays for about thirty minutes, citrus that doesn't rush, giving the rest of the composition room to arrive. Then the iris takes over, and the fragrance shifts from sharp to soft in a way that feels deliberate. The powder note builds, violet-dusted, almost powder-room clean. Underneath, the leather is already present, not announced, just waiting. By hour two, the iris and leather are inseparable. The tonka warmth that makes this gourmand begins to surface, sweet without being sugary, warm without being heavy. The drydown is leather finally claiming what was always its territory, tonka still present, but the iris fading into the background like a memory. On skin, expect eight to ten hours. On clothing, longer. The next morning, trace the wrist, leather and warmth, intimate and close.
Cultural impact
Gourmand Leather has developed a following among those who know their way around a fragrance counter, the kind of scent that gets mentioned in "hidden gems" discussions and value-fragrance forums. Wearers consistently note the 8-10 hour longevity and moderate sillage as proof that budget fragrances don't have to sacrifice performance. The iris-leather combination draws comparisons to more expensive compositions, though this fragrance has its own identity, sweeter, more powdery, less austere than its counterparts.
