The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Filippo Zanini founded Zanini in Italy in 2021 with a philosophy rooted in using natural ingredients to create olfactory landscapes that function as artful narratives. His 2025 limited-edition experiment, Bar, represents the most extreme statement of this philosophy to date. Rather than building a fragrance in the conventional sequence of opening, heart, and drydown, Zanini constructs Bar entirely from what most houses would consider heart materials, creating a scent that begins where others peak. The result is a concentrated expression of his belief that fragrance should be experienced as a continuous sensory event rather than a staged performance. Each ingredient, from the bright citruses to the deep myrrh, serves as a brushstroke in a larger composition that prioritizes intensity over progression.
The note selection for Bar reflects Zanini's commitment to natural ingredients that carry strong individual personalities. Pepper varieties, both pink and black, provide the sharp clarity that most houses reserve for opening moments. Rose and cocoa create an unexpected floral-gourmand tension that is further complicated by hyraceum, a natural ingredient derived from the petrified excrement of the rock hyrax and prized for its complex, animalic warmth. Myrrh and cade oil add smoke and resin, grounding the brighter elements. The inclusion of feijoa fruit and acacia suggests an interest in botanical undergrowth, ingredients that provide nuance without dominating the overall composition.
The evolution
The evolution of Bar follows an unconventional arc. Instead of the expected transition from bright to deep, the fragrance maintains its peppery, spicy character throughout most of its lifespan while subtly shifting in texture rather than tone. Pink pepper and black pepper remain constant, their interplay softening over time as rose and cocoa come forward. The green notes of oregano and coriander gradually recede, replaced by the warmer, more resinous qualities of cade oil and myrrh. Hyraceum emerges slowly, its animalic presence becoming more apparent as the brighter elements fade. Feijoa fruit and citruses provide intermittent brightness against the deepening background. The net effect is not a journey from one state to another but rather an exploration of how a fixed set of materials can reveal different facets as the wearer moves through hours rather than minutes.
Cultural impact
Bar’s off‑beat mix of citrus, cocoa and animalic notes has sparked conversation among niche enthusiasts, positioning it as a talk‑worthy piece in the 2025 limited‑edition releases. Its unconventional blend challenges traditional fragrance hierarchies, inviting collectors to discuss the balance of spice and earth. Over the past year, forums have highlighted its role in redefining modern bar‑inspired scents, and its limited production run has added a sense of urgency that fuels community dialogue. Critics note that the fragrance’s ability to bridge bright aromatics with a grounding dry‑down creates a memorable narrative that resonates across seasonal transitions, cementing its place as a cultural touchstone within the niche perfume scene.
