The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Sophia Grojsman created Yvresse in 2011 as part of La Collection, the house's curated expression of its heritage. Grojsman is the nose behind some of the most enduring YSL feminines, her fingerprints are all over Paris and Tresor. With Yvresse, she returned to a fruity-chypre structure, a cornerstone of the house's tradition. The name carries intention: Yvresse sounds like ivresse, French for intoxication. It is a reissue with purpose, bringing back something that worked, without apology. Grojsman's approach here is confident, drawing from her decades of expertise to revisit a composition type that defined an era of YSL femininity while remaining relevant to the modern wearer.
What makes Yvresse distinctive is the way Grojsman handles the transition from fruit to florals. Most fruity-florals let the top notes evaporate while the heart takes over. Here, nectarine and litchi don't disappear, they settle beneath the violet and rose, warming the composition from underneath. The patchouli in the base isn't the earthy, aggressive kind found in darker masculines. It lends depth without weight, creating a foundation that supports rather than overwhelms.
The evolution
The opening is immediate. Nectarine and litchi arrive together in a burst that feels almost effervescent, bright, sweet, with just enough tartness to keep it from cloying. Like biting into a perfectly ripe piece of fruit on a warm afternoon. The transition to the heart reveals violet first, its powdery quality tempering the sweetness, then rose arrives to deepen the floral register. The fruit doesn't vanish, it settles beneath, warming everything from underneath. This is the heart's real achievement: it feels both powdery and alive. By the time the base emerges, patchouli becomes a dominant voice, not dirty, not heavy, just present and grounding. The violet and rose fade to whispers. The drydown is patchouli and violet, close to the skin, intimate. Yvresse is a fragrance that unfolds beautifully over time.
Cultural impact
Yvresse occupies a specific space: refined, well-crafted, and rooted in house tradition. It offers something for the wearer who wants a fruity-chypre with real depth, not safe, not boring, just honest. The composition stands apart from fleeting trends, relying instead on the kind of craftsmanship that has defined the house for generations. For those who appreciate structure and nuance in their fragrance, it remains a compelling choice.
