The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
The Join The Club collection launched in 2013 with a clear intent: themed variations around shared obsessions. Don was Xerjoff's study in danger and indulgence, contradiction as concept. Chris Maurice composed it around an unexpected pairing, gunpowder and spun sugar. Smoke and sweetness. The dangerous and the soft. This wasn't about making something that everyone would like. It was about making something that would make people feel something, and then remember it.
The notes do something unusual here. Gunpowder gives a metallic, mineral crack, the smell of a struck match, sulfur and heat. Spun sugar is pure confection, almost childish in its sweetness. They shouldn't coexist. They do, and the tension is the whole point. Whiskey brings warmth and a boozy depth that keeps the sweetness honest. Tobacco grounds everything, gives it weight. Molasses adds body to the drydown, makes sure it lingers. This is a composition built on contrast, the crack of gunpowder underneath keeps the sweetness from being merely pleasant.
The evolution
The opening hits hard. Gunpowder arrives first, sharp, mineral, the crack of a struck match in a room that's too dark. Spun sugar follows, sweet and slightly burnt, a confectionery edge that shouldn't work but does. For the first hour, the two notes circle each other in tension. Then tobacco enters, broad and warm. The whiskey deepens, becomes less boozy and more resinous. The sweetness shifts from spun sugar to caramel, the burnt edge mellowing into something warmer. By hour three, the sillage has softened. The gunpowder is still there, it's always there, but it's no longer the loudest voice. It becomes the backbone of a warm, sweet, smoky cloud that stays close to the skin for hours. Eight hours in, gunpowder lingers at the edge like a fading ember, tobacco and caramel fused into a warm, sweet smoke that refuses to fully disappear.
Cultural impact
Don has earned a devoted following for its unusual combination of notes. The gunpowder element sets it apart from more conventional tobacco fragrances, giving it a distinct identity within the Join The Club lineup. Its boldness has made it a conversation piece among collectors who appreciate fragrances that challenge conventions rather than play it safe.
