The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Elysion takes its name from the Elysian Fields, the paradise realm in Greek mythology where heroes found peace after death. But WienerBlut drew inspiration from Gustav Klimt's gilded vision of that ideal place: pure joy, pure happiness, pure love. The brand wanted to translate an intangible concept into something you could wear. Fig leaf and angelica root provided the verdant freshness. Aniseed added an unexpected coolness. Water jasmine and ISO-E-Super created that sense of light without weight. The result is a fragrance that feels like sunlight through leaves, present but not quite graspable.
The aniseed note is what makes Elysion distinctive. Not the aniseed of black licorice candies or ouzo, something cooler, almost medicinal at first contact. It arrives as a brief sharpness before settling into the composition, adding a green, herbaceous counterweight to the warmer elements. Combined with ISO-E-Super and water jasmine, it creates a modern, molecular florality that reads more as an impression of flowers than a literal floral note. Mimosa absolute adds a powdery, honeyed softness that prevents the whole thing from feeling too austere. The composition sits in an unusual space, green enough to feel fresh, warm enough to feel intimate, abstract enough to feel modern.
The evolution
The opening is bright and immediate. Fig leaf against citrus, with angelica root's earthy bitterness cutting through. Within 30 minutes, the top notes begin to recede as ISO-E-Super and water jasmine take over, the heart phase reads as translucent florality, clean and slightly synthetic in the best way. The aniseed lingers longer than expected, a cool thread running through the heart. The drydown arrives around the 3-4 hour mark: cedar, musk, and amber settling close to the skin. The sillage drops to intimate, only those in close conversation will notice. It wears like a subtle, immaterial cloak, as the official description says. The next morning, a faint woody-musky trace remains on unwashed skin.
Cultural impact
Since its 2023 launch, Elysion has found a following among niche fragrance enthusiasts who appreciate its unusual combination of green freshness, cool aniseed, and abstract florality. The composition challenges conventional fragrance structures, the aniseed note particularly divides opinion, creating strong reactions in either direction. It's a fragrance that rewards those who engage with it rather than those who simply spray and go.
