The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Citron Vert & Vanille translates a simple idea into wearable form. The name does the talking: green citron and vanilla, held together by cream and caramel. It's a gourmand built around balance rather than sweetness alone. The citrus isn't a fleeting accent here. It threads through the cream and caramel with a bracing clarity, keeping the whole composition from collapsing into sugar. The green lemon reads almost herbal, like zest pressed between cold fingers, and that green sharpness does real work, cutting through the dairy warmth and giving the vanilla somewhere to breathe. The caramel arrives darker, cooked low and sticky at the edges, but the citron keeps answering back. What you smell is a dessert that doesn't believe in finishing itself with sugar alone.
What makes this composition interesting isn't the vanilla. Plenty of fragrances have vanilla. It's the way the citron behaves. Instead of a bright, brief citrus spark that vanishes, the green lemon threads itself through the caramel and cream, acting almost like salt in a dessert. It keeps reappearing, lightly, as the vanilla deepens. The citron doesn't behave like a top note at all. It behaves like an ingredient with a longer job, woven into the cream so that every breath of sweetness arrives with a faint green edge riding alongside.
The evolution
The opening reads sharp and almost herbal, like zest pressed between your fingers, the green character unmuted and very present in the first moments. Then the cream and heart arrive and the whole thing takes over a second register, milky and warm, sweet but not yet sugary. The caramel surfaces eventually, cooked dark, almost burnt-sugar at the edges, and it gives the sweetness a darker gravity. As the hours pass, the citron fades from the front of the composition but keeps flickering underneath, brightening the vanilla each time you catch a fresh waft. The drydown is pure vanilla and cream, but it's a vanilla that remembers it had citrus in its youth. On fabric the next morning, it's a ghost of warm cream and faint zest, the kind of trace that makes you check your own wrist.
Cultural impact
Citron Vert & Vanille sits in a curious corner of the fragrance world. It's a gourmand that refuses to behave like one, keeping its sweetness lifted by a persistent green edge. The composition reads like a dessert remembered in a cleaner, more citric key, warm cream and caramel balanced by a lemon thread that won't quite fade. Fragrance comparison lists often place it near other vanilla-leaning releases like Serge Lutens Un Bois Vanille and Goutal Vanille Exquise, but the citric sharpness here gives it a different texture, lighter and more bracing than either.
