The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
X arrived in 2022 as part of UY Studio's expanding fragrance line, a creative house whose work spans fragrance as one expression of a broader practice. X reads as their study in rooted green warmth: the kind of scent that feels less like a fragrance and more like a place. The composition centers patchouli in its richest, most grounded form, supported by oud, sandalwood, and tonka bean. There is no floral interlude, no bright citrus opening to distract. Just earth, wood, and warmth from first spray to last breath. The density of the formula is immediately apparent on skin, where the patchouli arrives without any of the usual lighter notes to soften its presence. Instead, the opening feels heavy and deliberate, almost architectural in how it constructs itself around a single core idea.
What defines X compositionally is how directly it presents its core materials. Patchouli enters fully formed, dense and slightly medicinal, then gradually warms as tonka bean introduces a soft sweetness underneath. Oud here reads more as a textural element than a starring note, adding depth without dominating. Sandalwood rounds the whole thing into something creamy and grounded. The interplay between these four materials is unusually tight. Each note interlocks with the others rather than appearing in distinct phases, creating a composition that feels unified from start to finish.
The evolution
X opens with patchouli at full volume, no preamble. The green-earthy quality is immediate, almost damp, like turned soil after rain. There's no sparkle, no citrus lift to soften the entry. Soon after, tonka bean begins threading sweetness through that green density, rounding the sharpest edges without brightening the overall picture. Oud surfaces gradually, not as a separate event but as a deepening, a shadow that settles into the patchouli's base. The sandalwood eventually takes over the mid-register, lending a creamy, almost milky texture that makes the whole composition feel heavier and more intimate. The drydown settles into a warm, resinous close: patchouli softened by residual tonka, oud now fully integrated, sandalwood holding everything together like a bass note that refuses to leave.
Cultural impact
X appeals to those drawn to cerebral, androgynous compositions that prioritize mood over performance spectacle. The patchouli-oud-tonka structure creates a unified green-woody profile that feels rooted in material rather than trend. Its absence of a bright opening note gives the fragrance a distinctive weight from the first spray, something that sets the tone for the entire wear. The composition doesn't chase accessibility or immediate likability; it asks for attention and rewards it with depth.
