The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
The House of Oud's Crop series is where the house experiments. Each year, a limited edition, a different theme, a new conversation between oud and something unexpected. Crop 2023 turned to hemp, not as novelty, but as material with its own character, bringing an herbaceous, vegetative quality to the blend. The house asked what happens when green herb and ancient wood sit at the same table, creating an unexpected dialogue between the fresh and the timeless.
The interesting thing about hemp as a perfumery material is its range: green, sweet, slightly vegetative, with an unmistakable character that most people recognize immediately. Paired with Indian oud, dark, smoky, resinous, it creates a tension between fresh and deep, bright and ancient. White pepper acts as the bridge, cutting through the sweetness and sharpening the transition from top to base. It's an unconventional combination that rewards attention. Not every fragrance needs to be approachable on first spray. Some need you to come to them.
The evolution
The opening announces itself immediately. Hemp: green, sweet, with that distinctive vegetative quality. Within minutes, white pepper arrives, clean, sharp, cutting through the sweetness like a blade. The next several hours soften the hemp and deepen the pepper into something warmer and spicier, creating space for Indian oud to emerge. By the drydown, the oud dominates: dark, smoky, with a slightly animalic quality that defines quality oud. The hemp note doesn't disappear, it lingers as a subtle green undertone beneath the resinous surface. The white pepper fades to a quiet whisper. This is an intimate fragrance, staying close to the skin through the drydown. On fabric, the green and woody elements intertwine in a lingering trace that speaks to the blend's complexity.
Cultural impact
The Crop series has become The House of Oud's experimental laboratory, each edition pushing oud into new contexts. The 2023 edition, with its hemp and white pepper, continues that trajectory. It's the kind of fragrance that either pulls you in immediately or requires a few wears to appreciate. Either way, it leaves an impression.
