The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Winter Woods arrived in 2020 from The Dua Brand, a Los Angeles house that built its name reconstructing high-end scent profiles at approachable prices. This one draws directly from Burberry's 2017 bespoke release, Antique Oak, a composition built around the deep, smoky interplay of cade oil, leather, and resinous woods. The Dua Brand took that blueprint and built it into an Extrait de Parfum, concentrated and unapologetic. It's a study in dark, tarry warmth, the kind of scent that doesn't try to refresh or brighten. It commits. From the saffron-spiced opening to the papyrus-and-styrax heart and the long, smoldering drydown of cade and leather, Winter Woods wants to be worn in a heavy coat, not a linen shirt. The brand's signature here is translation without dilution. Every element that made the original feel weighty and old-world carries over, recalibrated for an extrait-strength format that pushes the smoke forward and lets the resins linger.
What separates Winter Woods from a dozen other woody-oud releases is the cade oil. It's a birch tar derivative, produced by dry distillation of juniper wood, and it carries a rubbery, campfire-smoke character that most synthetic reconstructions can't fake. The Dua Brand leans on it hard, letting that tarry note anchor the entire composition. Papyrus adds a dry, papery grain rather than sweetness, while styrax brings a resinous, almost medicinal warmth. Together with saffron's leathery spice, they create a structure that reads more like a materials archive than a modern perfume. The oud isn't a star here. It's a shadow, giving the blend its quiet depth without demanding attention.
The evolution
The first 15 minutes are deceptive. Saffron lifts up first, warm and slightly sweet, with leather underneath that reads polished, almost dressy. Then the cade oil arrives, and the whole thing tilts. The smoke isn't clean woodsmoke. It's tar, rubber, the inside of a workshop where something was just set on fire. By the 30-minute mark, papyrus and styrax lock in, adding a dry, resinous grain that makes the leather feel older, more cracked. The saffron retreats but doesn't disappear. It hums underneath for hours. By hour three, the composition has settled into a confident, smoky warmth. The oud surfaces faintly in the background, giving the blend a quiet bitterness that keeps it from going sweet. On fabric, the cade and leather hold for well into the next day, pulling the papyrus grain with them. It's not a fragrance that evolves into something delicate. It evolves into something more honest. What you smell at hour one is what you get at hour eight, just quieter and closer to the skin. That's the point.
Cultural impact
Winter Woods belongs to The Dua Brand's Inspired Expression collection, a series of compositions built around reconstructions of established niche and luxury releases. It draws specifically from Burberry's 2017 bespoke Antique Oak, a scent from the brand's entry into niche perfumery that gained attention for its heavy use of cade oil and smoky leather. The Dua Brand's interpretation keeps that tarry, unpolished character intact rather than smoothing it for a wider audience. Within the broader landscape of woody-oud fragrances, Winter Woods occupies a specific lane: it's not a clean, designer-friendly smoke, and it's not a traditional Middle Eastern oud. It sits closer to the aesthetic of houses like Beaufort, which lean into raw, challenging materials.
