The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Town & Tides arrived in 2026 from The Dua Brand, composed by Mahsam Raza. The fragrance sits within the brand's Inspired Expression collection, a line built around reinterpretations of established compositions. The composition itself is restrained to the point of severity: clary sage, sandalwood, and amber, with nothing ornamental crowding the structure. Raza's approach treats the composition as architecture rather than ornament, letting each note carry its own weight without leaning on the others for support. The clary sage reads green and herbal at the top, almost cooling in the way it lifts off skin. It hands off to a sandalwood heart that feels warm and quiet, creamy without losing the wood underneath.
What makes this composition unusual is the restraint. A woody aromatic with only three notes in the pyramid leaves nowhere for mistakes to hide, so each ingredient has to perform. Clary sage brings herbal lift and a slightly hay-like sweetness that sets the tone before the heavier materials arrive. Sandalwood, placed in the heart rather than the base, acts as the structural center, creamy and grounding without going heavy. Ambergris finishes with that warm, skin-like salinity that gives woody compositions their quiet sensuality. The minimalism is the point.
The evolution
The clary sage announces itself within the first few minutes, bright and herbal with a green edge that feels almost cooling before it softens. That opening doesn't shout, but it doesn't whisper either, holding the air for a moment before the composition begins to rearrange itself. As the top notes settle, the sage starts to recede, and the sandalwood begins to surface. The transition is gradual rather than abrupt, like a slow shift in temperature rather than a change of season. Sandalwood takes over and settles into the center of the composition, warm and creamy, with a quiet density that fills the space without crowding it. It doesn't cross into sweetness, and it doesn't try to. The amber surfaces in the later stages of wear, adding a soft, musky layer that grounds the sandalwood and gives the whole composition a skin-warmed quality.
Cultural impact
Town & Tides sits within The Dua Brand's Inspired Expression collection, a series built around reinterpretations of established compositions. Its appeal comes from doing very little and doing it well: a woody aromatic that earns its presence through restraint rather than volume. It's the kind of composition that fits into a workday, a dinner, a Sunday, anywhere understatement reads as confidence. The fragrance doesn't try to compete with louder wardrobes or heavier compositions. It sits comfortably alongside them, offering a quieter option for the moments when a more considered scent makes sense.
