The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Self Image of Her arrived in 2021, the work of perfumer Mahsam Raza and part of The Dua Brand's Inspired Expression collection. The brief was unapologetic: capture the confident woman who knows what she wants and doesn't dilute herself to be palatable. The formula leans into warmth from the first spray, with tobacco absolute grounding the composition in something smoky and substantial. Vanilla absolute wraps around that tobacco like soft light around embers, adding a creamy sweetness that keeps the blend approachable without ever tipping into dessert territory. Jasmine threads through the middle, lifting the heavier notes with a luminous floral breath that prevents the scent from collapsing into pure gourmand territory.
What makes this composition worth a second look is the balance of three materials that could easily overwhelm each other. Elemi resin opens with a peppery, lemony brightness that most people associate with incense, not perfume. Then the tobacco leans in, not cigarette ash, but the cured-leaf warmth of a humidor. Vanilla arrives last and does something unexpected: it doesn't get syrupy. It holds its shape because the elemi underneath keeps things from collapsing into dessert territory. That tension, between sweetness and smoke, is where the fragrance lives.
The evolution
The first ten minutes belong to the elemi. Peppery, almost pine-fresh, with a lift that catches you off guard in a composition labeled as a vanilla floral. Jasmine creeps in around the fifteen-minute mark, and it does what good jasmine does: adds a soapy, almost green sweetness that smooths the resin's edges. By the thirty-minute mark, tobacco takes over the heart. Not aggressively, more like the residual warmth of a room where someone smoked a cigar an hour ago. The vanilla arrives in the second hour and stays for the long haul. Four to six hours in, what's left on skin is a close, skin-warm blend of vanilla and tobacco, almost amber-toned. The next morning, on a scarf or collar, you'll catch a faint sweetness, a ghost of jasmine and the last breath of resin.
Cultural impact
Self Image of Her sits within The Dua Brand's Inspired Expression collection, a line that reflects the brand's broader creative direction. The fragrance itself reads as a study in contrasts: the smoky depth of tobacco absolute set against the luminous lift of jasmine, anchored by a vanilla base that provides warmth without overwhelming the composition. On skin, the opening carries a confident warmth that announces itself without shouting, settling within the first thirty minutes into something softer and more rounded.
