The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
The Dua Brand launched Reflecting on Greatness in 2021, and the official description pulls no punches about the ambition. The composition was built around a whipped pineapple-custard accord balanced against incense and patchouli, aiming for something that reads triumphant without tipping into the syrupy. The brand's own copy frames it as a celebration of the great person inside you, and the name does the heavy lifting right out of the gate. The juice backs it up with a blend that opens bright and tropical, then steadies into something meditative and grounded, like the adrenaline fading after a long climb. Up top, the pineapple note lands soft and creamy rather than sharp or acidic, the way fresh-cut fruit smells when it's been left in the sun for a few minutes.
What makes this composition interesting is the tension between its two poles. The top reads almost edible: pineapple creme, coconut, custard, with mandarin and neroli cutting through the sweetness. Then the middle pulls hard in the opposite direction, with frankincense, incense, and patchouli creating a smoky, almost devotional quality. The pineapple and coconut pairing gives the opening a milky, sun-warmed quality, like the scent of sunscreen and ripe fruit layered on warm skin. Mandarin brightens the first few seconds with a quick citric flash before the custard note swallows it whole.
The evolution
The first 15 minutes are all about the pineapple. Bright, juicy, almost like biting into the fruit fresh, with the coconut giving it a creamy roundness and the bergamot and neroli adding zest. The custard accord sits underneath, not fully present yet, just a suggestion of something richer to come. By the 30-minute mark, the citrus starts receding and the incense begins to surface. This is where the fragrance pivots, and the transition is surprisingly clean. The patchouli arrives around the 90-minute mark, earthy and slightly damp, grounding the sweetness that came before. The frankincense continues building, and the whole composition takes on a smoky, resinous quality. The pineapple never fully disappears, but by hour three it's more of a ghost note, a memory woven into the wood. The drydown settles into cedar, oak wood, and ambergris, warm and slightly salty, the kind of skin scent that lingers well into the next day on fabric.
Cultural impact
Within The Dua Brand's catalog, Reflecting on Greatness has carved out its own following. Wearers tend to gravitate toward it for warmer months, where the pineapple-coconut opening gets the most mileage, though the incense and wood base make it surprisingly wearable into fall. The pineapple note reads almost candied in summer heat, blooming louder and sweeter when the temperature climbs, while the incense threads stay subtle enough not to clash with humidity.
