The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Prickly Solar came together in 2026 under perfumer Mahsam Raza, a composition built around the unexpected lead of prickly pear, a note still relatively uncommon in mainstream perfumery. The Dua Brand designed it to feel like sunlight translated into scent: bright, accessible, and quietly joyful rather than heavy or brooding. Prickly pear and bergamot arrive first, and they arrive the way good light does, without ceremony. The opening is luminous and almost edible, a brightness that doesn't announce itself so much as simply appear on the skin. There is a softness to the way the top notes unfold, almost like condensation on a cold glass catching the sun. Raza's intention reads clearly: capture the warmth without the weight, the sensuality without the shadow.
What makes Prickly Solar interesting isn't the rarity of its materials; it's the restraint. Prickly pear is an unusual top-note choice, a fruit with a vegetal edge and a cactus-cool greenness that most fruity fragrances ignore in favor of peach or pear. Pairing it with jasmine rather than rose keeps the heart from tipping into classic floral territory. And anchoring everything in iris rather than the usual white musk or sandalwood gives the drydown a cool, powdery gravity. Raza built a composition that could have gone syrupy or gone sterile, and instead landed somewhere mineral and alive. It's the architecture that makes it work: each layer pulling the next toward freshness instead of sweetness.
The evolution
The first thirty minutes are almost entirely fruit and citrus, a bright, almost fizzy opening that reads more like biting into something than wearing something. Bergamot provides the sparkle, prickly pear the body, and neither overstays. The two notes seem to share the same bright register, and their combination gives the opening a quality that feels both effervescent and grounded, like sparkling water poured over fresh fruit on a warm afternoon. By the hour mark the jasmine has fully entered, and the composition shifts from luminous to creamy, the white-floral warmth sitting just above the skin rather than projecting outward. This is the phase that surprises people, because the jasmine here is neither indolic nor soapy.
Cultural impact
Prickly Solar arrived in 2026 as a fragrance built around an unusual lead: prickly pear, a note still rare in mainstream perfumery. Its release signaled a quiet return to bright, sunlit florals in a category that had grown accustomed to heavier, more opaque constructions. The Dua Brand positioned Prickly Solar within its lineup as an inspired take on an existing reference, framing it as its own composition rather than a strict copy.
