The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Poppy joined The Dua Brand's Inspired Expression line in 2022, a house that has spent years reconstructing recognizable luxury profiles. This particular release set out to interpret Jo Malone's Scarlet Poppy Cologne Intense. The brand approached the project the way it approaches all of its reconstructions, and the work landed in an amber-floral register built around iris and ambrette. The opening has a powdery chill that settles quickly into something warmer, almost like stepping out of a cool room into afternoon sun. There's a quiet confidence to how the notes are arranged, with nothing shouting for attention and everything contributing to a soft, hazy whole.
What makes the composition distinctive is how the iris and ambrette work in tandem, one offering cool, rooty sophistication, the other offering musky, almost nutty warmth. Poppy pulls the whole thing into a slightly sleepy, dusty register, paired with heliotrope's almond sweetness and barley's grainy, bread-like undertone. The fig doesn't shout. It adds a quiet green sweetness, the kind that lives in the background and makes everything around it feel a touch rounder.
The evolution
The first 30 minutes are the softest, almost cream-of-rice gentle, where the fig and tonka are most present and the iris is still finding its footing. Heliotrope opens almond-sweet, like marzipan without the sugar rush. By the two-hour mark, the iris has settled into its true register, cool and powdery, like the smell of a vintage compact mirror. Ambrette moves to the foreground, warming the whole composition against skin. Barley emerges around hour three, lending a dry, grainy texture that reads almost like toasted bread crust. The drydown from hour four onward is all skin: tonka, ambrette, and the ghost of fig that clings to fabric and warm spots for hours after. On a sweater the next morning: mostly tonka and barley, faint, comforting, the kind of trace that makes you lean in to catch the last of it.
Cultural impact
Poppy reads as a soft, contemplative composition, one that earns attention through texture rather than volume. The iris note does most of the structural work, lending the fragrance its powdery, slightly cool center, while the surrounding notes add dimension without overwhelming the central character. The composition feels suited to early spring mornings, to soft-lit dinners, to the kind of moments where a fragrance is meant to be discovered rather than announced. The heliotrope's almond sweetness gives the opening a gentle, almost edible quality, while the barley and tonka anchor the later stages with grainy warmth.
