The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Hidden Accords landed in 2023 as part of The Dua Brand's Inspired Expression collection. This one zeroes in on the oriental vanilla register: blood orange brightness, a herbal lavender buffer, then the deeper pull of oud, rose, and licorice working against a vanilla base. The composition itself reads as a layered take on a familiar category, with each ingredient contributing something distinct rather than blending into a single impression. Blood orange offers a juicier, more dimensional citrus than the standard bergamot opening found in many orientals, and the lavender reads cool and slightly camphoraceous, a brief that keeps the top from feeling too sweet or gourmand too early.
What makes this composition interesting is the tension between the opening and the base. Blood orange and lavender are bright, almost clean, the kind of top notes that would normally promise a breezy finish. Instead, the heart folds in oud and licorice, two materials that drag everything downward into something denser. The rose sits between them, softening the oud's resinous edge without letting the orange's citrus become the headline. Vanilla anchors the whole structure, but it's not the sweet, frosting-style vanilla.
The evolution
Hidden Accords wears in phases, each one shifting the balance of materials. The opening belongs to blood orange and lavender, with the citrus reading bright and slightly bitter against the herbal coolness of the lavender. The green thread from the lavender gives the opening a clean, almost transparent quality, the kind of top that suggests a simpler fragrance than what actually unfolds. Something shifts as the heart develops. The oud arrives without fanfare, not a sharp resin note but a soft, woody depth that starts to pull the lavender inward. Licorice adds a dark sweetness, which bridges the citrus opening to the warmer heart. Rose shows up quietly, more as a texture than a statement, working alongside the oud rather than competing with it. As the composition settles into its base, the vanilla takes over, but it carries the oud and licorice with it.
Cultural impact
Hidden Accords sits in the oriental vanilla category, a fragrance family with deep roots in perfumery traditions that span the Middle East, North Africa, and South Asia. Vanilla has long served as a foundational material in this register, providing warmth and sweetness that balances heavier resins, woods, and florals. Oud, rose, and licorice all carry their own cultural weight within oriental perfumery, each one tied to specific regional traditions and historical contexts.
