The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Father of Alchemy arrived in 2022 from The Dua Brand, and it draws from the Kemi Blending Magic line, a sister imprint of Xerjoff. The fragrance pays direct homage to the 2014 original Jãbir, recreating that amber floral composition with careful attention to the source material. Notes of oud and vanilla appear in the formula, anchoring the composition with a dark warmth that gives the amber floral its gravity. The interplay between those deeper base notes and the lighter heart creates a version that feels familiar in structure but specific in execution, with each note contributing to a layered result that rewards close attention.
What separates this from a flat re-render is the layering inside the heart. Lily of the valley and rose share the stage with pink pepper and freesia, and the florals carry a peppery brightness that keeps them lifted rather than heavy. The vanilla and patchouli ground the composition, settling underneath to provide warmth without overwhelming the cooler tones above. The oud is present but restrained, a shadow rather than a statement, giving depth without demanding attention.
The evolution
The opening leans into the cooler, brighter side of the formula. Freesia and violet come forward first, almost powdery in character, with pink pepper flickering underneath like a faint electrical current. As the fragrance develops, the rose and lily of the valley begin to dominate the heart, shifting the mood from the initial powdery lift toward something denser and more weighted. The base eventually settles in with patchouli, vanilla, and a low oud hum that clings to fabric with impressive persistence. Even as the top notes fade entirely, the warm backbone of vanilla and musk continues to register, remaining perceptible well into the later hours of wear. The drydown reveals just how much of the composition's architecture was waiting in the base all along, with the grounded sweetness taking full command once the brighter elements step aside.
Cultural impact
Father of Alchemy arrived in 2022 as part of The Dua Brand's collection, and it sits within a category the house labels Inspired Expression. The fragrance borrows the architecture of Jãbir (2014) from Kemi Blending Magic, a Xerjoff sister label, and renders that amber floral within its own framework. Within the Oriental Floral category, compositions built around rose, oud, and vanilla have established a recognizable vocabulary, and Father of Alchemy contributes to that ongoing conversation between the floral and the resinous.
