The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Bay of Berries launched in 2020 as part of The Dua Brand's Inspired Expression collection, and it wears its inspiration on its sleeve. The fragrance draws directly from Blackberry & Bay by Jo Malone, a composition that pairs dark fruit with herbal green in a widely recognized structure. The Dua Brand didn't hide that lineage. It amplified it, pushing the blackberry note further and emphasizing the deeper, earthier facets of the composition. The result is a scent that knows exactly what it's referencing and chooses to make the berry louder, the woods earthier, the whole thing more present on skin.
What makes this composition worth attention is the structural tension between the herbal and the gourmand. Bay leaf and grapefruit cut through the sweetness of blackberry like citrus over a fruit tart. The cedar and vetiver in the base don't just support the fruit. They drag it toward something more grown-up, more grounded, so the fragrance reads less like a body mist and more like something you'd find in a glass apothecary bottle. The Dua Brand's approach to reconstructing well-known scent profiles is to study the architecture and then adjust the volume on individual notes, and in Bay of Berries the dial on the blackberry turns well past where the original sat.
The evolution
On skin, the blackberry arrives first, tart and almost candied, sharpened immediately by grapefruit zest and the cool green snap of bay leaf. There's a brightness here that reads like cold water on warm fruit. Within the first twenty minutes the florals start to surface, not as a distinct bouquet but as a softening agent, rounding the edges of the citrus and making the whole opening feel less sharp and more lived-in. The cedar enters quietly around the forty-minute mark, and the vetiver follows it like a shadow, adding an earthy weight that the opening never promised. By the two-hour mark, the fruit has pulled back significantly, and what remains is a warm, woody close that feels closer to a forest floor after rain than a berry patch in summer. The bay leaf never fully leaves. It stays in the background like a thread you can feel but not quite name. On fabric, the blackberry lingers noticeably longer, and the cedar gains a dry, almost pencil-shaving quality that doesn't show up on skin.
Cultural impact
Bay of Berries brings a bolder berry presence right from the opening, with blackberry and raspberry notes that announce themselves with confidence before settling into a green, leafy heart. The herbal facets come from the bay leaf, which weaves through the fruit in a way that keeps the composition feeling fresh rather than syrupy. As the fragrance develops on skin, the base notes of cedarwood and musk start to surface, grounding the sweetness with a clean, slightly woody backbone that gives the scent staying presence throughout the day.
