The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Mahsam Raza composed Attar Of Founding Father for The Dua Brand's Inspired Expression collection, released in 2026. The name carries weight, a founding father of a house, of a tradition, of a region where this kind of fragrance has meant something for centuries. Two notes carry the entire architecture: jasmine for the floral register, oud for the woody foundation beneath. The pairing sits at the foundation of perfumery's oldest vocabulary, yet Raza treats the combination without ornamentation or cushioning. There's no supporting cast arriving to smooth transitions or fill negative space. The result reads closer to a historical artifact than a modern release, a deliberate exercise in restraint that trusts the wearer to sit with it.
What Raza does here is refuse to elaborate. The jasmine arrives with its own character intact, bright and unmistakable. The oud underneath carries its own gravity, dense and present. That tension, floral against wood, brightness against shadow, is the whole composition. Nothing mediates. Most compositions built around this pairing lean on supporting materials to ease the passage from flower's lift to wood's depth, but this one leaves the gap unbridged and lets the contrast do the talking.
The evolution
The first thirty minutes belong to jasmine, and not the clean, soapy version. This is jasmine that carries warmth, the smell of flowers with enough density to feel almost physical rather than decorative. It sits close to the skin, present without announcing itself from across a room. As the composition moves forward, the relationship between the two notes begins to shift. The jasmine doesn't disappear so much as deepen, and gradually the oud underneath becomes harder to ignore. What starts as a jasmine-forward reading slowly rebalances into something where the wood has equal say. The transition isn't sharp; it unfolds through the gradual redistribution of weight between petal and bark. As hours pass, the oud's character comes further forward, its darker register asserting itself while the jasmine remains woven through it rather than replaced by it.
Cultural impact
Attar Of Founding Father enters a conversation that has been running for a long time within fragrance culture, the ongoing negotiation between heritage materials and contemporary composition. By 2026, the interest in stripped-back compositions built from a small number of high-quality materials had become one of the more visible currents in independent perfumery, and this release sits firmly inside that current. The Dua Brand's decision to center a two-note composition around jasmine and oud reads as a statement of intent, a deliberate rejection of the idea that complexity requires a crowd of supporting accords.
