The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Two Le Labo legends, one bottle. The Dua Brand took Bergamote 22, a cult citrus-woods composition, and Vanille 44, its companion in the brand's hybrid catalog, and stitched them into something new for 2021. The brief was obvious: take the parts people fall hardest for in each, and merge them into a single wearable composition that captures the spirit of both references. The result landed in their Inspired Hybrid collection as 22 Shades of Vanille Bergamot, an Extrait de Parfum concentration in a 30 ML bottle. Vegan by design. Unisex by intention. Discontinued since, which makes the hunt part of the appeal. The bottle is compact, the juice is potent, and the whole project reads as a deliberate study in how two recognizable scent families can coexist without canceling each other out.
The interesting part isn't the mash-up itself, it's the materials doing the heavy lifting. Sicilian bergamot carries that green-peel bitterness, the kind that reads less like cologne and more like the rind you snap open with your thumb. Vanilla brings the warmth that anchors the composition, while guaiac wood and cedar hold the smoke underneath without letting it turn ashy. Each note pulls its weight, and the blend between them feels intentional rather than accidental. Layering petitgrain alongside grapefruit gives the citrus phase a green, leafy undertone that adds depth to the opening.
The evolution
The first hour is the show. Sicilian bergamot and grapefruit crash in, aldehydes lifting the whole thing into a fizzy, just-sprayed brightness that makes you check your wrist twice. Mandarin orange softens the edges. Petitgrain adds a green stem note, like the citrus hasn't been picked yet. The opening moves fast, each citrus note stepping forward in turn, then stepping back to let the next one take its bow. Then the wood arrives. Cedar and guaiac wood arrive together, smoky rather than dry, and the aldehydes vanish without ceremony. Bourbon vanilla surfaces in the second hour like a slow exhale, warm and dense. Orange blossom flickers through for ten minutes and is gone. Musk and amber settle into the base, and the whole composition drifts inward, quieter, closer to skin.
Cultural impact
The Dua Brand has carved out a space in the fragrance world by reimagining established scent profiles, and 22 Shades of Vanille Bergamot sits squarely in that lane: a hybrid of two Le Labo references, Bergamote 22 and Vanille 44, presented as an Extrait de Parfum. The composition speaks to a specific kind of wearer, one who gravitates toward the bergamot-woods profile and appreciates the way vanilla can warm a citrus structure without overwhelming it. The fragrance exists within a larger conversation about how recognizable scent architectures can be reinterpreted through the lens of concentration and note selection.
