The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Raging Agar launched in 2023, a composition built entirely around agarwood, the resinous heart of oud. The fragrance treats agarwood as the central pillar of its structure, using natural materials without smoothing or dilution. There's no tentative opening, no polite introduction. Agar appears early and stays prominent throughout the wear, anchoring every other note to its resinous gravity. The name reflects the composition itself: agar that rages, that refuses to be background. This is a fragrance that wears its material identity openly, with the kind of presence that makes itself known in a room without raising its voice.
Turkish rose absolute opens the composition, chosen for its jammy, almost wine-like depth that cuts through the darkness of the oud rather than getting lost beneath it. Malaysian oud provides the backbone, raw and unapologetic in its presence, carrying the kind of dense, smoky character that defines the entire wear. Saffron arrives to sharpen the edges, adding a spicy, slightly bitter thread that lifts the heavier materials. Chinese oud contributes its own distinct layer, bringing what sources describe as a floral insect aroma to the blend.
The evolution
The first 15 minutes are surprisingly bright: citrus lifts the rose, giving the opening an almost boozy, honeyed lift before the oud arrives. Then the heart opens. Leather and saffron take over, joined by benzoin and frankincense that burn slow and smoky. The rose never disappears, but it shifts from fresh to vintage, darker and more candlelit as the wear progresses. The drydown stretches past 8 hours, settling into a warm, resinous close where the oud remains prominent but softened, integrated with the amber base into something more unified. The saffron lingers in the background, its leather-spice thread still detectable even in the final hours. The guaiac wood and benzoin contribute to a base that feels lived-in and warm, the kind of scent that develops rather than simply fades.
Cultural impact
Only 30 bottles of Raging Agar were produced, a small batch that places it among the rarer oud-forward releases on the market. It appeals directly to oud devotees seeking the material in a form that doesn't dilute or domesticate it. The composition delivers agarwood at the kind of concentration where every facet of the resin shows through: the smoky, the animalic, the slightly sweet, the deeply resinous. For wearers who want to smell like agarwood rather than a hint of it, this is the territory Raging Agar occupies.
